1987 Toyota Van Wagon CARGO

Vehicle Details

Time to sell this very unique Toyota Van 4x4 with camper buildout. This van lived most of its life in sunny San Diego and I purchased this a few years ago (it has been garage kept in Rhode island) and did a camper conversion in the back including 36" heavy duty sliding drawers/rear camp kitchen setup and fold out bed system. This van has been a blast to own and build out. We have taken it all over New England and eastern Canada, including a long road trip when my soon to be wife and I got engaged. If you’re not familiar this van is a 4x4 with manual front locking hubs and has a short wheelbase so excellent turning radius on the smaller back country roads. Life is always changing, we are getting married this summer and moving to Thailand to work at a hospital near the Burma boarder so have to downsize, hence this vehicle sale.

The previous owner had meticulously cared for the van and below is a list of things he had done to the van before I bought it. He gave me a very thick folder with all receipts and documentation of work done over the years, including a huge pile of his receipts for all the work he did on the van and also have receipts for anything I did to it. It also comes with a huge number of spare parts (more than I can count) which are stored in multiple boxes that will come with the van and nearly fill the back of the van. I have two official shop manuals for the van, the folder of receipts, and an unofficial “Toyota Van -The Real Owner’s Manual” which is a very thick folder of many printouts and threads from the now defunct Toyota Van Community website. The previous owner downloaded all of this excellent information before the site went offline.

I have two full sets of keys including 2 of the ravelco “keys”, also a third key for all the exterior doors.

Comes with a very nice Yakima roof basket and extendable Smittybilt awning as seen in photos. All ready for overlanding adventures. This is a camper build in progress, it is definitely ready to hit the road now, but I had planned on installing a Maxx Air 5100K MaxxFan Deluxe with Remote roof vent/fan this summer but will hold off now that we are selling. That is why the small portion of the interior ceiling has the wood panel removed. If the van sells for $10,000 or more I will include the fan and the box of all the parts needed to install, total value of over $600.

Previous owner installed a really cool Ravelco anti-theft system (Google it). This means this van has a push button start and is essentially impossible to hot wire and steal if you remove the Ravelco key. This is an amazing feature to have on an old vehicle that you do not want to get stolen.

As of this month it has a brand-new battery, new alternator, fresh engine oil, and transmission oil! The van starts right up and runs great (see video). It is ready to go on adventures. We were planning on a big autumn trip before changing plans and moving out of the country.

If you know anything about these vans you will be very happy to know the previous owner solved the Heat soak problem and the "hose of death" was replaced and as is listed below he replaced radiator with a Yuba City core and additional dual electric cooling fans which all work perfectly.

That being said although it is a Toyota with lots of excellent maintenance done to it, it is still from 1987 so there is no warranty.

Things I have had done professionally since I owned it…

-cylinder head inspected, valve seals replaced

-complete head gaskets replaced

-new distributor

-spark plugs

-vacuum hoses

-new igniter control

-most heater hoses were replaced

-both front suspension ball joints replaced

-replaced power steering pressure line

-replaced differential oil

*And plenty of other things

The following is info FROM the previous owner...

Mechanicals:
He had over $18k into this van. The list is long. -Aisin manual front hubs
-rebuilt tranny and transfer case (automatic) -Fuel pump (Dealer)

-custom aluminum radiator shroud
-new head gasket (OEM)
-new exhaust manifold and gasket
-new steering bevel gear (recall campaign- done by dealer)
-new throttle kick-down cable

-Hose of Death replaced with custom aluminum outlet plate (access hole cut into rear of engine hump).
-custom rear driveshaft
-rebuilt rear diff with Eaton Tru Trac Posi traction

-4 Yokohama Super Van 356 LT195/75R14/D1 Load rating D

-Oil pan gasket replaced.
-All 4 fuel injector connectors replaced (soldered not crimped).
-Front wheel bearings re-packed with new seals.
-Passed CA Smog with flying colors on 4/18/2018
-New stereo installed plus new rear speakers on 4/23/2018: New Kenwood w/Bluetooth/CD/USB/Remote, etc.
-Installed a used Glove box from another TVT member.

Finally a few things to address:

-A/c was converted to R134A by previous owner, did blow cold when we first got it not anymore. The fans work fine but not cold air. It may just need to be recharged, but possibly has a leak. I never investigated this further.

-when shifting to reverse there is a clunking sound, might need new mount – I have not had time to look into that yet, but all regular gears shift very smooth while driving.

I know this is a long post, I hope I can convey how fun and unique this vehicle is. If you any further questions please let me know I will be sure to answer them to the best of my ability. If you would like any other specific photos posted please let me know.

Thanks!
