1989 Toyota Supra MKIII Turbo Targa-Top 5-spd man 77K miles Gorgeous Condition!
1989 Toyota Supra Turbo Targa
1989 Toyota Supra Turbo 3rd-Gen (MKIII) in beautiful original cosmetic condition with only 77K original actual miles. The car has been garage-kept and covered (garage queen) its entire life and driven only on special occasions – thus the low miles. There are no body or exterior cosmetic modifications, including the original “saw-blade” wheels, which gives it a gorgeous all-original 80’s vibe that is truly beautiful (though, I am biased). The car has been responsibly modified to make more power, but all modifications are reversible if you’re a purist and don’t like any power modifications. I have all of the original parts, with the exception of the exhaust, but it runs amazingly better with the intake and exhaust opened-up a little. I bought the car around year 2000, so I’ve had it for around 22 years (wow, time flies) and I believe the previous owner was the original owner. The car starts, runs, and drives beautifully and is ready to drive wherever you desire with power to spare. The AC and heat both work great, as does the factory adjustable suspension. This is a legendary, powerful, and gorgeous car in uniquely nice condition
.
Mechanical: The engine and transmission are original (no engine swaps or transmission swaps). The engine is a 7MGTE 3.0L straight-6, single turbo and the transmission is a R156 5-spd manual (known to be bullet-proof and highly desired for manual swaps in other cars). The car has been very well maintained and the oil comes out like clean honey (probably due to changing it regularly, even if the miles are less than 3000). The clutch and brakes are in great working condition.
Mechanical Modifications: K&N FIPK intake kit, Greddy E-01 boost controller and E-manage fuel computer (mounted in glove box), Blitz FATT turbo-timer, Aeromotive adjustable fuel pressure regulator (AFPR), Lucas 550cc fuel injectors, Lexus Air Flow Meter (AFM – this was a popular mod in combo with the 550’s), Blitz NUR-spec 3-inch stainless mandrel-bent exhaust, Suprasport cast stainless turbo elbow, 3-inch stainless downpipe with bung added for wideband O2 sensor (wideband not currently installed), Upgraded CT26 (factory) turbo with a 57-trim compressor (spools like stock, but punches a lot harder and I still have the original/stock unmodified turbo), walbro 255 liter/hour hi-flow in-tank fuel pump, EGR delete, Greddy oil catch-can mounted under headlamp, Driftmotion polished aluminum intercooler pipe kit and upgraded front mount intercooler (FMIC), HKS SSQV blow-off valve recirculated to intake (you can vent it to atmosphere if you like popping and crackling). For those not familiar the Achilles heel of the MKIII supra is cylinder head gasket (due to factory under-torque) – to avoid this (this car has never had a blown head gasket), I pulled the head and sent it to SHP Racing Heads, who refurbished the head with a 3-angle valve job, bronze valve-guides, new valve stem seals, and a resurfaced mating-surface, suitable for the 1.4mm cometic head gasket that I fitted to the lapped deck surface along with ARP head-studs. The head work was done in 2004 and there have been zero issues since then. The car has all mods necessary to make 400+ reliable rear wheel horsepower (rwhp), but I have not yet commissioned any dyno runs or detailed fuel tuning. I set the fuel pressure to a good value and watch the EGT’s and she runs like a dream (like a scalded ape), but some mild dyno-tuning would likely facilitate more power. I’m only running 14.7 psi and it’s plenty for me (tires break-free easily and you can steer-by-throttle in the turns), but there’s room for plenty more.
Interior: the interior is all original and in gorgeous shape. The only modification is a replacement Lo-Tek a-pillar with pillar-pod gauge mounts for the Auto Meter exhaust gas temperature (EGT), boost (the stock gauge doesn’t go high enough), and fuel pressure gauges (note: all gauges were fitted with green backlighting to match the factory gauge colors). I still have the original trim if you don’t like the extra gauges. The e-manage is mounted to the ash-tray with industrial velcro (can be removed) and the fuel computer and e-manage hub are mounted in the glove box with the same industrial velcro. The factory stereo was replaced with a nice Alpine head unit in the early 2000’s, so it may be a bit dated now, but it was awesome then! There’s a bazooka bass tube mounted in the hatch (sounds great) that can be easily removed if desired. The factory speakers were all replaced with Infinity in the early 2000’s and still sound great.
Exterior: The body is all original, including all the paint (no wrecks, no body work, no paint work). There are maybe a couple of nicks here and there, but no dents to speak of. The paint could maybe use a good polish to bring out the luster a bit more, but is in fantastic shape.
Tires: The Goodyear tires are old and worn (maybe 10% tread remaining), but hold air great for years at a time and don’t have any rubbed-through spots or radial wire showing, etc.. I would suggest replacing them before any very high-speed shenanigans and I can even have them replaced if desired, but I know folks are picky about tires so I thought I’d let the new owner pick out their favorite brand. I’m not aware of any other issues on the car at all.
