"...timeless design and practicality... makes the FJ40 a true classic." website, 2015 "Classic" is an oft-used accolade for the F40. Jalopnik writer, Andrew Maness: "By so many standards, the FJ40 Land Cruiser is the definitive 20th century 4x4. With an international pedigree like a Land Rover, the rugged simplicity of a Jeep, and swagger like an old Bronco, the FJ is a greatest hits album of classic trucks. Fun to look at, sure, but driving one will take your appreciation to a whole new level." He continued: "It's a wonderfully simple vehicle that is much more than the sum of its parts, not only due to the vehicle's capabilities, but because of the things people associate with it: Toughness, adventurousness, reliability, style... the qualities of an FJ40 read like the Tinder profile of someone you'd bring home to your parents."
The FJ 40 soft-top, offered here in Baja Yellow with black accents (including the fabric top and black front grille), makes good on all that basic appeal, but goes well beyond to add power, capability, and comfort not part of the original design. The result is impressive on every score.
Power: The original engine has been replaced with a 350 cubic-inch V8 featuring Edelbrock finned valve covers and an Edlebrock/Weber four-barrel carburetor beneath an Edelbrock-branded air cleaner. All-new wiring and ignition systems have been installed, as well as a custom aluminum radiator.
Capability: A custom, heavier front bumper and suspension lift kit with upgraded shock absorbers have been added. Aggressive-tread 33-inch Nitto Desert Terrain Dune Grappler tires (including a spare carried Baja-style in the rear cargo area) are mounted on aftermarket wheels. The front axle features manually-engaged locking hubs. A heavy-gauge, black-painted roll cage is present across both the passenger compartment and rear cargo area.
Interior: In addition to the standard F40 dash instruments and gauges, an Edelbrock digital fuel-management monitor is mounted on the passenger side. A wood-rimmed chrome aftermarket steering wheel is mounted. A rugged and lockable center stowage/armrest box houses the Sony audio head unit. Bazooka speakers, both below the dash and mounted to the roll cage behind the passengers, complete the sound system. Twin, grey-vinyl-clad, high-back Carbeau seats replace the more pedestrian factory seats. A grinning (or grimacing) skull knob sits atop the three-speed floor shifter.
The more than 195 high-definition photos together with the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors site faithfully present this up-engineered FJ from every angle, including from underneath. Of course, nothing can take the place of an in person, close-up inspection, which is why we encourage interested parties to visit our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. We only ask that an appointment be made in advance by phone or email.
Just last year, Hagerty's Jeff Peek looked at the market for these legendary vehicles and concluded: "As the Toyota FJ40 market settles, now might be the time to buy." We tend to agree.
