"... the (FJ60) Land Cruiser I was most eager to drive because it's the one the Cool Dads drove when I was a kid. Like the FJ55, the FJ60's styling was a few years behind the times even when new, but it had an appealing retro vibe before retro vibes were a thing." Aaron Gold, Automobile Magazine, 11/13/2019
That Fj60 Land Cruiser "retro vibe" is still a thing. And it's contributing to continued and growing interest in this traditional boxy 4WD 5-door truck/SUV. Increasing values reflect this surge in interest. The FJ60 is the third generation of the Land Cruiser, beginning with the Jeep-inspired FJ40 followed by the larger, somewhat unusually styled ("homely" was an oft-used descriptor) FJ55. The FJ60 brought the Land Cruiser into a more livable, "comfy" form for suburban families, yet still held onto the vehicle's off-road heritage and credentials. The FJ60 is part soccer-mom SUV, part serious off-road sport truck, part very capable work truck. It's as at-home in a suburban driveway as it is on-site in an Oklahoma oil field.
The FJ60 offered here is a true "Southern truck" having lived a good part of its life in Louisiana and Mississippi in the hands of a trout fisherman and white tail deer bow-hunter. One imagines some number of its 118,000 miles-fewer than 3,200 miles per-year-must have been spent traversing back roads on the way to secret trout streams and off-the-grid deer habitat. Since 2008, the FJ has resided primarily in rural Michigan. For all of that, the truck's condition is excellent overall with no accidents reported to Carfax, and no body sheet-metal issues. Emblems, chrome trim, headlights and taillights are all present and in fine condition. Its relatively recent re-paint in medium forest-green was professionally executed. Door jambs and under-hood surfaces all wear the new paint. The truck enjoyed upgrades by the prior owner, and now features aftermarket M/T alloy wheels wearing oversized all-terrain rubber. Heavy-duty steel-tube bumpers have been added front and rear. A rear trailer hitch is also in place.
Under the hood, the stock (and stout) Toyota 4.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine is mated to a factory 5-speed manual transmission. The engine bay is complete and tidy, but stops short of over-detailing. The undercarriage shows extremely well front to back, clean with an absence of problematic rust issues.
Inside, the simple instrument panel features straightforward instrumentation and includes an upgraded aftermarket audio head unit. Side-by-side floor-mounted shifters engage the transmission and the 4WD transfer-case. Gray cloth upholstery throughout shows little wear; it's clean and properly installed front and rear. The vertical-stripe door-card upholstery-a characteristic feature of the FJ60-is in nearly as-new condition. If these upholstery items have not been replaced, it's safe to say prior owners made sure mud was always removed from passengers' hunting jackets and fishing waders before they were allowed to ride back to camp. Black carpeting is in serviceable condition, as is the cloth headliner. Rear cargo area shows evidence of use (but not abuse) consistent with real-world life.
This FJ60 comes with original factory manuals, a mounted spare tire, a box of assorted spare parts, and receipts for recent maintenance.
"1981–89 Toyota FJ60 values are spiking, but they're still a bargain over FJ40s." headlines like this have certainly played a role in the rising values of these Toyotas. We'd like to think that, however good an automotive investment this FJ60 might be, its next owner will be treating it to regular trips into terra incognito. After all, that's where the FJ60's soul resides.
