1979 FJ40 LAND CRUISER - A STUNNING & SUPERB ONE OWNER ORIGINAL SURVIVOR IN ITS ORIGINAL MUSTARD YELLOW PAINT - A TRUE COLLECTORS DREAM
When looking for that one-of-a-kind, gotta-have, super original vehicle all over the internet, a voice inside your head says "will I ever find that great original, sitting in some barn or garage somewhere......? As the story goes, every once in a while, if you are lucky enough to be looking in the right place at the right time, you come across something so rare, and that same voice in your head says, "is this too good to be true - could this be the-one...?" Well the answer for all you barn-yard-find dreamers, is, "YES, ...it is that good" This is a rare one indeed. In fact, I have only come across one similar to this FJ in the entire country over the past several years that had very similar qualities and it sold for $100,000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Dollars).You may contact me and I will give you a link to this 100k comp that was sold about 6 months ago if you would like to see it for comparison.However, that FJ40 was a 78' (not as desirable) and technically that FJ40 was a two owner truck. This one here that I have for sale is an originalone owner with the documentation to support it, all the way back to the original purchase in 1979 by Uncle Cam.
This was our uncle's originally purchased FJ40, bought with all the bells and whistles including the option for power steering and a 10,000 lb Warne winch (and a few other items listed on the bill of sale). It was purchased for approximately $10k back in 1979 and I have the original bill of sale from the Toyota Dealership where it was purchased. This FJ was primarily used to go hunting and fishing on a private 100 acre plus property once a month or maybe less, in only two seasons. In the winter months the FJ was kept in a heated garage and driven a few miles every 3 - 4 weeks just to keep things greased and running. I think Uncle Cam put an average of 500 or 600 miles a year driving out to the lake on his property which was a nice smooth grassy terrain. The "original tires and original wheels" (yes that's right) the original tires from when bought new remain in perfect shape and look like they have about only a few hundred miles since they really did not see much asphalt unless he drove in to town, but not more than 5 or 6 times a year to get gas or a postal drop, and only in good weather. The Original "Steelie Wheels" are in absolute perfect condition and you have to see them toappreciatehow beautiful they are.
Everything works as it should. The oil was changed every 500 miles or 6 months which ever came first and boy does it show. The only real mechanical work done to this engine of only 28k original miles was a couple of regular tune-ups and a full carburetor rebuild a few years back which one would expect to have taken place over this period of time. As any person with minimal mechanical knowledge would understand, the carburetor rebuild was only the result of just time, not misuse or neglect. But that's it folks, nothing else to report as far as repairs besides the oil changes, oil filter, oil pan replacement and a new battery a few years ago. This truck was driven so minimally and lightly over the past 38 years and taken care of so routinely well that it simply did not sustain any mechanical problems and had no issues. It really had a nice easy life with zero abuse and zero traditional off-road use. I do not consider the short 15 minute ride on Uncle Cam's property over to the lake or even on a hunt to be "off-road". It was very smooth terrain, not at all what one would consider off-roading or anything of that nature. Sure he may have gotten some mud up in the wheel wells on occasion but my point is the truck did not see any roughhousing or abuse. Cam is pushing 78 years old so you can understand that he was not a stunt driver and nobody but Cam drove this FJ.....period!
All the gauges work and illuminate as they should. Gears shift smoothly and effortlessly and with the power steering option in 79' this truck drives like a dream. Everything else on this truck believe it or not remains original and stock. From the shocks and bushings, to the brakes and mostly everything else in-between, this is as close to it's original condition from years back as you will ever find. The removable top was never even taken off ever!I know it is hard to believe, but this is the true definition of a time capsule FJ40 that was well preserved over the years. If I had to rate it on a 1 to 10 scale I would give it a 9.8 and the only reason for not getting the "10" is because there are two small areas of surface rust and a few paint bubble spots that have surfaced in past years but they were just hit with some silicone spray and that is all. Cam chose to not make any replacement/repairs as it would lose it's "original" status. According to Cam, once you do any body work or replace any metal areas, or any patch work, well there goes the "all original" status and you can no longer make the claim of being an "all original".
If you are looking for these full restoration "frame-off's" popping up weekly and coming out of central and southAmericaat a dime a dozen, well, these non US Spec trucks don't come even close to what we have here for sale. Sure you might not see these imperfections that I mentioned, or a less than perfect undercarriage that doesn't shine with new overspray of some sort, but there is a lot to be said about an all original vs. a "frame-off" for the serious vintage collector/buyer of FJ40's. These trucks have really begun to increase in value at a truly unbelievable rate over the past decade. They will continue to increase and especially one so desirable as this one here. There are very few true originals out there of this caliber. The last one that was sold as I mentioned fetched $100k and that is as real as it gets!
This is a bitter-sweet story to see such a beautiful original go. But all things including car/truck ownerships do come to an end at some point in time. Some are just better ownerships with great history than others. And this one here is as amazing as it is rare. This is truly as good as it gets if you are looking for an almost impossible to find original FJ40 to add to a collection or to be the coolest original FJ40 owner on the planet. Even the regular worn-down and beaten-up, multi-owner FJ's are fetching ridiculous money. But this original is in a class of it's own and some lucky buyer will walk away with one of the great ones.
All Original Books/Manuals and even the winch manual is all here and come with the sale. Winch was never used, other than running it a few times to keep the moving parts lubed. The original jack has never even left its original location and never used. Also included is an original CB radio with 2handhelds as part of the set that Cam used tocommunicate with the family when way out on the property.
