1987 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 Convertible 22RE SR5

1ST GENERATION 4RUNNERSR5CONVERTIBLE:Super clean rust free classic 1987 Toyota 4RUNNER SR5 4x4 runs & drives as good as it looks.Comes with clean Texas title and many thousands of dollars in receipts for valuable new parts & labor documenting a rebuilt engine. Anybody couldjump in this truck and drive it coast to coast feeling confident it wouldn't need anything but gasoline. I've been a Toyota aficionado for 40 years and I can tell you this, if you've ever wanted a really nice one the time to buy is when you see it because it won't be around long. Somebody else will snatch it up while you procrastinate. I hear that all the time, especially for all original gems like this.HISTORY:This amazing truck was born in 1987 in a factory in Hamura, Japan. Itwas the 2nd year that Toyota offered the Independent Front Suspension (IFS) mini truck and the 4th year of the 1st Generation convertible top 4Runner. It's lived its whole life in the American South West where the air is so dry nothing rusts.
MECHANICALS:This rust free truck features an exceptionally strong running, recently rebuilt 22RE (2.4L SOHC) original engine with paperwork to document. It's mated to a rugged Aisin A340 automatic transmission. It's mated to a rugged A340 4 speed automatic. Other features include power disc front brakes, power steering, and factory AC that not only blows cold but has been professionally converted to the modern 134A freon. It drives down the road like a new truck. Tight, smooth, quiet & peppy with no rattles, no steering wander or suspension slop.
22RE (2.4L) 4 Cylinder with Multi-Port Fuel InjectionLegendarily reliable numbers matching 22RE runs like an industrial sewing machine.Starts every time with a click of key. No smoke, no knocks, no leaks, no issues. Very quiet. Excellent oil pressure. Runs cool, even on 112 degree Tucson summer days with AC blowing cold. Everything under the hood is stock & most everything is new. Introduced to the world in the 1983 Celica, these 22RE were the very 1st multi-port fuel injected in line 4 cylinder engines ever produced and they were so successful they ran virtually unchanged until 1995. The exhaust has not been modified and still retains the OE spec catalytic converter so it always passes emissions. Engine builders have long admired howthese 22R blocks are famous for being hardened with even more nickle content than old American muscle cars, meaning they can be rebuilt almost indefinitely. There's a grizzled old man who runs around Tucson with a mint old Hilux pickup with engine almost identical to this with 650,000 miles. Many examples with over 500,000 miles are common when you search the net. This one has only 20k miles since rebuilt with refurbished cylinder head, new cam shaft and rockers, plus new timing chain and guides.
4 SPEED AUTOMATIC A340 TRANSMISSION:Shifts smooth and concise as designed. Ask any transmission expert and they cannot deny that the Aisin A340 automatic transmission is arguably the best that humans have ever engineered. A 2008 Tundra with a direct descendant to this A340 recently documented 1 million original miles in Feb. 2017. Google it. This one has been religiously maintained. The 2 speed transfer case operates as designed. Factory Aisin manual lockout hubs (nobody disputes they're the toughest factory hubs ever produced) engage like new. This is a Toyota after all. Their 4x4 reliability is legendary.
IFS SUSPENSION, WHEELS & TIRES:Stock suspension clears new 31 inch radial tires mounted and balanced on factory 15x7 aluminum rims. All of the shocks are newer, meaning none are blown. All of the suspension and drive lines are tight and the brakes are new on all 4 corners.
DIFFERENTIALS:Both factory differentials are stock with 4.10 gear ratio, open carriers and zero leaks. All the gear oil is fresh.
INTERIOR:The interior is super clean and original with no rips or tears or stains on the original fabric or carpet. All of the lights, signals and gauges work as designed, with the SR5 interior package featuring not only tachometer but also real time oil pressure, temperature and voltage readings. Only the 84-89 4Runner SR5 features the center dash mounted Altimeter & Inclinometer. The AC blows cold. The heat blows hot. The factory interior panels are in great shape considering the age. The dash is in great condition for a southwestern truck. On the passenger side dash pad there's softer vinyl that has 2 normal thin heat cracks but is definitely in better shape than most this age. The driver's side dash pad is mint. There's a very nice sounding Alpine stereo system with a speaker bar mounted atop the factory roll bar in the back. The backing carpet on the rear of the back seats seats is missing shown in the picture of the rear cargo area. Importantly the rear tailgate window goes up and down with either the center console button or the key in the tailgate key lock.
FRAME & BODY:
This truck has absolutely no rust, zero, none, except maybe for some typical surface rust on the exhaust components. It's never been wrecked or even wheeled off road in any significant way and there's zero bondo. It's had one repaint a long time ago which shows it's age on very close inspection with some minor nicks and chips here and there and a bit of peeling starting on the right rear quarter shown in pics. The sheet metal is very nice and straight for a 31 year old truck - about as nice as they get.
INSURANCE:This truck is eligible for historic plates in any State. That also mean it's eligible for Collector Car insurance from outfits like Grundy Worldwide or Haggerty which only costs $12 per month for a $10,000 full coverage policy. That's right, a stated $10k full coverage insurance policy is only $12 per month and, get this, emissions are forever waived. I repeat. Collector Car Insurance means no more emissions and a cheap monthly nut on full coverage insurance.
OH WHAT A FEELING:
There's many reasons Toyota trucks are so legendary worldwide. It's no accident that no matter what part of the world you look at whenever you see news footage of guerrilla fighter soldiers with AK47s in the back of a pickup it's always a Toyota. Just find a counter-example? That's because Toyota truck reliability is 2nd to none. It's what soldiers count on. That's why Toyota is the only import vehicle ever allowed to compete in NASCAR racing. When Taliban or ISIS fighters tackle US Troops they're not running around in Fords, Dodge or GMC. They're not in Nissans, Subaru, Isuzu or Mitsubishi. No, on the contrary, they're always in Toyota trucks and that's part of the reason their resistance is so stubborn.
Unlike American vehicles of this era, every Toyota truck came with a fully boxed steel frame. Not only is the frame boxed square, meaning super strong, but also every nut, bolt and fastener is fine machine threaded. That's why a 31 year old truck like this has zero rattles and drives so tight. Virtually every American vehicle has coarse threads throughout and a C-channel frame with only the engine and transmissions having fine machine threads so except for some exceptional rare American vehicles, like Early Ford Broncos and some Jeeps with fully boxed frames, nobody in the USA constructed 4x4's with as much engineering integrity as Toyota.
FLAWS & BLEMISHES:Any 31 year old vehicle that hasn't had a frame off restoration is bound to have a few cosmetic blemishes that are hard to show up in pictures in both the interior and exterior. There's numerous nicks and chips from normal road use and age in the red paint but requires getting real close. There's some normal paint fading of the factory red on the fiberglass top. While there is a spare wheel and tire mounted in the rear under the bed it has not been removed and inspected and while the factory jack is still located in the driver's rear cargo door compartment it does not appear that the jack tool set is 100% complete. These jack set components are readily available on eBay as they are not exclusive to the 4Runner.
JUSTSO YOU KNOW:When you tender an OFFER on eBay it's just like a bid, actually it's equivalent to a BUY NOW simply because if that OFFER is accepted, you've then suddenly "entered into a legally binding contract for sale". That's per the TOS (Terms of Service) agreement you accepted when becoming an eBay member. The point is when you tender an OFFER you need not only be truly committed but also have the funds in place and your wife's permission because, for example, at auction's like Barrett-Jackson if you raise a paddle then renig on a bid they ruin your credit score the same as a loan default. This is not a video game. It takes months of preparation to present a vehicle like this on a public auction. It's no joke. This is serious business. Ebay auctions follow the same protocols and rules as any public auction.
PAPERWORK:
Clean and clear notarized "A" paper Original Miles Texas title is ready to go. Receipts documenting most all the important new parts & labor will be in a packet with the title along with a copy of the Experian Auto Check report with an above average score and no prior accidents.
INVESTMENT:Because of their exceptional engineering and reliability these Toyota Hilux pickups, especially the 22RE trucks like this, only go up in value every year even while you drive them, providing one of the best investments in the automotive world today, bar none. Fact is there will never be another made like them. They're 1 off legends, as important as American Muscle cars, and are getting exceptionally hard to find in this condition. If not now then soon this truck will be a bargain at twice the price.
CONTACT:Email through eBay or Call52O-Nine 77-O112for any questions prior to clicking which is highly encouraged.
FEEDBACK:If you have ZERO feedback and are serious about this truckthen before doing anything please be sure to call the number above so we can establish that you're not a squirrel. It won't take more than a couple minutes so please just do it or your offer will be cancelled. Unfortunately this is required due to the notorious reputation of eBay rookies for being impulsive non-paying bidders who don't read auction descriptions thoroughly.
BUYER NOTE:For those new to eBay or nervous about buying a vehicle over the internet, that's understandable, but think about these stubborn facts for a moment. I've been selling vintage 4x4's along with vintage parts on eBay for 18 years. Some 15 years ago I happened to sell a vintage Early Bronco to an eBay seller who runs a large scale pawn shop in Philadelphia with tens of thousands of feedbacks and he taught me this important eBay rule of thumb. Every positive feedback is worth about a dollar of trust. That means if you're buying something, say a special vintage carburetor for $300, then ideally the seller will have at least 300 positive feedbacks. This is just an ideal rule of thumb mind you. It's not etched in stone but rather a simple guideline or compass for action. So if there's somebody's selling a $10,000 vehicle with only 32 feedbacks I'd be leery. Doesn't mean it's not legit, it's just that there's not much track record. By contrast if a seller's asking $8k for a vehicle and has more than 12k positive feedbacks like myself, well then you can rest easier for you can ask yourself why would they risk throwing away their whole business model, their decades old hard earned feedback reputation for only $8k? The answer is they wouldn't.
IMPORTANT AUCTION TERMS SO PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.As noted from the outset, per the eBay "Terms of Service" (TOS) that you agreed to when registering your OFFER, should it be accepted, "constitutes a legally binding contract for sale" so don't start clicking if you're not committed to buy with funds in place and wife's permission. Please also make sure the phone number and address you have registered with eBay is current and if you're planning to use PayPal for the deposit that you have liquid funds ready to go that are not in the form of an E-Check which takes 5 or more days to clear, in other words, be a responsible bidder whose got their act together and doesn't have a bunch of excuses.
Inspection prior to bidding is welcome as vintage vehicles are always sold AS IS with no warranty expressed or implied.
PAYMENT TERMS:A non-refundable deposit of $1000 either viaonline PayPal payment orcard over phone through Square is due within 24 hours of auction close.
Full balance of Payment is due within 72 hours of auction close by either direct bank to bank wire transfer, or you can overnight envelope a Cashiers Check, or pay cash in person. PayPal for the full balance is not an option, however a credit or debit card payment through Square.com is, so long as buyer is willing to pay the 3% fees.
Shipping:All shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer however we will always help your shipper coordinate the loading to the best of our ability. It all begins by calling the number above. Figure shipping any vehicle East of the Mississippi is about a grand. West is less. We will store the vehicle free for 21 days after sale. There is a $15 per day storage fee thereafter unless other arrangements are pre-dickered. Note that many naive rookie eBayers imagine that they'll jump on a plane to Tucson, pay in cash in person, and drive the truck home. In most cases that wrong. Not because the truck will have issues but rather because you won't get cheap airfare to Tucson, you won't have legal plates driving home, and the overall trip costs plus gas is way more than you think.
