Background

The Toyota Pickup, known as the Hilux to the rest of the world, is one of the most reliable and indestructible vehicles of all time. If you are a Top Gear UK fan, you know exactly what I am talking about. The EFI Turbo Pickup was arguably the best model in the fourth generation Toyota Pickup line. the legendary 22R four-cylinder engine breathing through a low boost turbocharger, it was Toyota’s answer to V6 light truck offerings from Ford and Chevy in the late 1980’s. The forced induction does wonders to liven up the 22R at Colorado’s high altitudes. It even has a Turbo light in the instrument cluster to let you know when you are in the boost—a feature straight out of the ‘80’s. Finding a 1980s Toyota 4x4 Truck in good shape is rare; finding a factory Turbo is uber rare.

Summary

I am selling this 1986 Toyota EFI Turbo on consignment for a friend and fellow old school Toyota fanatic. It was originally purchased in California, but has been in Colorado since 1995, and is largely rust-free as a result. The only rust is on the bed fender spot welds, which is where every 1980’s era Toyota Pickup rusts. It has just had significant maintenance accomplished including timing chain components, engine seals and gaskets, suspension, exhaust, and a tune up. A complete list of all recent maintenance is in the mechanical description below. If you are cross shopping this against a later model Tacoma or looking for a beater work truck, you are wasting your time here. We would like to find an owner who knows what this is and will give it a good home.

Exterior

The late 1980’s body is the best Toyota Pickup in my opinion (that said from a Tacoma fanatic). It has none of the soft edges of the 1989 to 1994 generation Truck, or the Tacoma’s that followed. It is small, yet highly capable—a segment of the truck market that is missing in modern times. It’s light yellow exterior color is right out of the 1980’s and a similar color to the retro colors found in Toyota’s latest truck catalogue. I think it looks fantastic. The paint is in very good condition, the only flaws being the rusted spot welds on the bed. I have close up photographs of each spot on our website if you are reading this elsewhere. All VIN tags are in place, the Carfax is clean, and it has never been in an accident. The undercarriage and frame are free of corrosion, under body pictures can also be found on our website. All trim is in place, and factory mud flaps are included with the sale. The windshield is crack-free, and the side and rear window glass are in good condition. The passenger side window has some bubbling tint, but it has protected the interior from UV exposure. The headlight and indicator lenses are crack-free. The bed has some wear, but is presentable for a truck bed. The 16-inch third generation 4Runner wheels look great, they are wearing BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO tires with lots of tread left.

Interior

Open the door to this truck and you step back in time. The caramel tan interior is filled with 80’s greatness. A thin-rimmed steering wheel sits in front of analogue gauges and a turbo light—a turbo light! The gear shifter and 4x4 shifter are tall and manly (push button 4x4’s are for sissies). The sun visor has a warning placard that states that this is a lifted truck and it will roll over if driven carelessly—awesome! A placard on the dashboard gives turbo warm up and cool down instructions. The HVAC is controlled through sliders, not fancy displays. Inside it has everything you need and nothing you don't—except for a cup holder, and maybe air conditioning. No, those things are for sissies driving full size luxo-barge trucks! The condition of the interior is very good. The dashboard is crack-free, as are the door cards and factory rubberized floor covering. The bench seat has some minor wear on driver’s side and the springs can be felt through the seat back. Everything inside works exactly as it should, with the exception of the driver’s side window regulator. There is slight gear slippage when rolling it up, but it goes up with some help.

Mechanical

The owner of this truck is competent mechanic and fabricator that is well versed in Toyotas. When he got it, he set about doing a complete round of preventative and routine maintenance, which is timelined below. He also installed Pro Comp shocks and a KYB steering dampener. During his ownership it has always had annual or 3000-mile interval oil changes with Castrol 10W-30 synthetic, which ever is less.

In March of 2013, with 203,000 miles it got a full tune up, engine re-sealing, and timing component rebuild from 22RE Performance. This was followed by a short interval oil change. He also installed a turbo boost gauge. The complete list included:

Oil Change

Spark Plugs

Valve Adjustment

Valve Cover Gasket

Oil Pan Gasket

Intake Manifold Gasket

Exhaust Manifold Gasket

Front Crank (main) seal

Timing chain, Tensioner, and Guide Kit from 22R

Install Boost Gauge (no backlight)

In June of 2015 at 205,000 miles it got:

Clutch and Flywheel, Release Bearing, and Bushings

Transmission Fluids

Diff and Transfer Fluids

Last Oil Change was done in April of 2016 at 209,000 miles.

The Turbo operates on cue, which is verifiable by the boost gauge and seat of the pants feel. Every Toyota Pickup Truck should have come with a turbo; it is noticeable improvement over the stock 22RE motor. The turbo does consume a little oil under normal driving conditions. The owner reports consistent consumption of half a quart about every 500 miles throughout his ownership. It has always been consisten, and never worsened. You can continue to drive it as is and add oil, eventually it will need replacement, but based on the current level of consumption that should not be in the immediate future. Or...

***Included with the sale is:***

New Garret GT2554R, ball bearing, water-cooled turbo (same turbo as the LC Engineering kit)

Exhaust manifold and gasket, MR2 4AGE fuel injectors 370cc

1982 Supra 5MGE Airflow Meter

Larger Intercooler

The only itmes needed to finish it would be fabrication to reclock the Garret turbo, along with a wastegate, and down pipe.

I have a line on a factory replacement turbo that can be had for around the same price if you want to keep it stock.
