1988 Suzuki Samurai 4X4

Need a runabout for your estate? A third car for your household? Consider this 1988 Suzuki Samurai 4x4. These mighty mites were seen all over the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It has had the same loving owner since 2005 out of Arkansas and prior to that spent its early life in California and Nevada.

Finished in white, with contrasting black folding manual top and wraparound black bumper, the paint and trim are in overall very good order. The engine bay is in very good order and the body is straight and solid. The black, manual folding top is in very good original condition.

This wee 4x4 rolls on Maxxis MA-1 radials, size 205/70R15 at every corner. Each one is mounted to an alloy wheel painted body color. There is a full-size spare tire mounted on the back with a factory cover.

Under the hood is a 1.3L SOHC four-cylinder engine (code G13BA) with a carburetor. Backing this engine is a five-speed manual transmission. While not a drag racer, this Samurai was highly valued for its light weight and nimble handling.

Inside, the original tan cloth-and-vinyl front bucket seats and rear bench are in very good order. The seats are vinyl on the sides and back with cloth seating surfaces. The black carpet offers nice contrast. A distinctive four-spoke steering wheel faces the driver. The horn is inop. The inner door panels and dashboard look good and the dash has full instrumentation. A center console is in very good order while the console-mounted shift lever looks great. A Clarion AM/FM stereo with a cassette deck rounds out the interior.

The SJ-Series Samurai was introduced to the United States in 1985 for the 1986 model year. It had gone on sale earlier in Canada and Puerto Rico (as the Suzuki SJ410). When introduced in the United States, 47,000 were sold in its first year. It had a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine and was available as a convertible or a hardtop, and came equipped with rear seats until 1994. The Suzuki Samurai became intensely popular within the serious 4WD community for its good off-road performance and reliability compared to other 4WDs of the time, outselling the Jeep Wrangler by two to one in 1987. This is due to the fact that while very compact and light, it is a real 4WD vehicle equipped with a transfer case, switchable 4WD and low range. Its lightness makes it a very nimble off-roader less prone to sinking in softer ground than heavier vehicles.

Competition to this Suzuki in 1988 included Chevrolet's S-10 Blazer, Ford's Bronco II, GMC's S-15 Jimmy, Jeep's Wrangler, Nissan's Pathfinder and Toyota's 4Runner.
