This 1985 Subaru Brat is an original. The owner has had it for 5+ years. The vehicle is drivable and is mainly used for weekend drives.

Vehicle Details

I’m the second owner of this vehicle, I’ve owned it about 20 years and maintained current registration and insurance on it.

The gearheadproject.com states that only 923 Brats are still registered, this is one of those vehicles.

I drive it about once or twice a month, usually for a Home Depot trip or taking stuff to the dump. It is used on the weekends.

Mechanically, it is close to original. The previous owner said that he replaced the engine and clutch about a year before I bought it.

The good:

It runs and drives, the tires are a little flat spotted, which you will notice above 55 mph. A couple of years ago I drove it from my home west of Atlanta to south Florida and back without any problem. The original jump seats are included, but I’m not sure how they mount in the bed. Currently it gets driven about once or twice a month. It can be driven home, but it is nearly 40 years old, so bring tools just in case.

The bad:

The front right CV axle inner boot is torn. The exhaust pipe is missing about half way down the length of the body so it is loud when you drive it. I replaced the water pump about 10 years ago, there are two types that fit this model. I bought the only one they had in stock, and the pulley is different than the original so the AC belt wouldn’t fit back on. The AC worked until the water pump was replaced. The AC belt comes with the vehicle. Replacing the water pump with the correct one will be required if you wish to restore the AC function. The electronic ignition module failed about 15 years ago. Back then it cost $390 for a replacement so the distributor was modified to use a GM ignition module for a 1974 Malibu ($14.00) The GM ignition module is mounted to the air cleaner. The fuel gauge works intermittently. The radio stopped working. The right front tire needs air about once per week. The wiper blades need to be replaced. If you plan on driving it home and there is a chance of rain, that would be highly recommended.

As you can tell in the pictures it is kind of dirty. It would benefit from a good cleaning. The hood was replaced before I acquired it. It appears to be black primer.

It comes with a clean title and is currently registered so the ad velorum tax is up to date. These are getting pretty rare and I would love to see it go to someone who will love, drive, and maybe restore it.

Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. You are welcome to come see and test drive it if you are local.
