Description:
1951 Studebaker Champion Regal DeLuxe 10G-W5
Prime example of the iconic 1950-1951 Studebaker style, this rust-free Regal DeLuxe has spent its entire life in a 100 mile radius between Roanoke, VA and its current home in Greensboro, NC. Sold at Jarrett-Chewning Motors on March 20, 1951 and having its first VA inspection slip at 00005 miles, this is essentially a lightly-reconditioned survivor. From the last VA inspection slip in 1987, you can see that less than 5,600 miles have been accrued over the 32 years to present day.All photos taken today, March 16th; final mileage after re-storage is 29,997.2 miles.
Body
Body #12798. The original Maui Blue paint remains untouched on the doorjambs, in the engine bay and in the trunk as factory primer and paint. In 2009 the body was sprayed in a superb basecoat-clearcoat; undersides of hood and trunk were sprayed in a single-stage coatusing the identical mix code. Finish is excellent overall, no signs of accidents or damage.
Original headliner, door panels, kick panels, carpeting, rear shelf and all seating surfaces. Custom clear vinyl covers (LeBarron-Bonney) to further protect the upholstery while driving regularly to shows or on errands, Very nice reproduction rubber floor mat and trunk mat are now in place of the old ones. Pic shows trunk floor in factory paint and sprayed deadener.
Stainless trim is excellent, optional "Strato-Styled" hood ornament and fender spears have been beautifully chromed. All interior chrome pieces are in first-class condition; the parking brake handle chrome is worn through, however.
Both the the door key/lock and trunk key/lock work perfectly (see pics).
Electrical
The system has remained 6-volt positive ground and works beautifully. To ensure strong starts the first time and every time, I replaced the starter switch, starter solenoid and both battery cables with new reproductions, along with the commercial refillable battery you see in the photos. Most of the cloth wiring is still in operation; any questionable sections have been removed and replaced by the previous owner and me.I have and continue to use the 6V "Battery Tender Jr" on all my past 6V cars and can't say enough about them. A must-have if storing with an electric clock!
Both the vacuum wipers and the very unique black-light instrument panel lighting work - as do all the instruments themselves. Map, door pillar and rear dome lights all work from their respective switches. The unique Climatizer system works (incl. fan, core, defroster, valve) as it should, as does the restored AM tube radio. An NOS clock and the invaluable Borg-Warner overdrive were both added by the PO and all work beautifully. Having a working OD system makes this Studebaker a lot more confident on long and higher-speed journeys.
Powertrain
Original 170 ci engine, #840062. B-W T-96 3-speed with optional R-10 overdrive added in the restoration.
Thermal choke makes for nice cold starts, idle speed is low and smooth, shifts are quiet and confident. Clutch shows no chatter and has decent take-up, could maybe be bit more aggressive? Nothing ofconcern, just trying to report any minor faults. Ride is exceptionally smooth and quiet.
With a new 160 deg thermostat, factory timing, 10W-30 oil and 91 octane fuel the temperature settles nicely into normal range, even in the hot South. Having the OEM heat shield over the glass bowl fuel pump is a rare but useful option in preventing vapor lock.
Wheels and Brakes
New complete stainless line set and rubber flex lines (3) installed Aug 2018 to replace the originals; new master and wheel cylinders installed by PO. Still maintains the unique plunger-adjuster shoe set-up from the factory and all wheels have been lubed and serviced. Braking is excellent.
Tires and spare are the now-obsolete Allstate w/w bias tires, still with excellent tread; car has been raised off ground in any longer term storage. An extra set of steel rims and suitable w/w radials for longer journeys (PO showed the car across Virginia at various shows) is included.
Reserve is low and I believe lower than market-appropriate for a ~30,000 mile example.
All documentation and service/sales/parts manuals will also come with the car, including nearly all VA registration/inspection slips from 1951 to 1987, salesman's business card, original warranty jacket, pre-delivery card and glovebox manual. OEM paper Service and Chassis Parts list books are also there; the radiator and glovebox cards are repro, but the original cardboard glovebox and the rare paper paint code label that is stuck to its underside make this car that much more special.

(Note: the brighter lines in the headliner picture were due to the sunshine reflecting off the vinyl seat covers, not discoloration, bleaching, etc.)
