Good running and solid Studebaker Daytona Wagonaire. This wagon comes with a Studebaker 259 8-cylinder engine and a column-shift manual transmission with Overdrive. The clutch is brand new. The Wagonaire is quite rare because of it's retractable rear roof. The seats are in near-perfect condition, and the dash is in very good condition. Door panels and glass are also in very good condition. Glass is good all around. Although the paint is poor, there is very little rust on the body, making this a good candidate for restoration. In the pictures in may look like rust, but you are most likely seeing the original paint showing around windows, chrome on the hood and tailgate. The original paint on this Studebaker was called Golden Sand Metallic--it's basically a tan or light brown. You can see the paint color in the engine compartment. The Daytona also has custom wheels, newer tires, and a new clutch.The NADA guides list the retail value of this car in Low condition at $7,150, and Average condition at $16,600.
The Wagonaire runs good and the new clutch performs well. It idles nicely and warms up fairly quickly. The odometer shows barely over 6,000 miles, but this must be at least 106,000, although the doors hinges are in very good condition. There may be a slight exhaust leak on the driver's side, but I'm not sure where it is. The engine seems to have very good compression and the sound reminds me of a dual exhaust Chevy 283 from my past. Brakes work well, but it pulls a little to the right when braking strongly. All the exterior lights work--including turn signals--with the exception of the parking lights. This could be a problem with the switch. The dash lights and heater fan are also inoperable, which again could be switch issues. The horn works, the windshield wipers work, and...get this...the AM radio works. Love it.
There is very little rust on this wagon, and I've taken pictures of the worst spots. The floors, even with the sliding roof above them, are in very good shape. The worst offender, of course, is the tailgate, but mostly on the inside lower portion at three locations. The outside rust on the lower tailgate doesn't appear to be nearly as significant, but it has been painted over. There next biggest rust deposit is on the passenger-side rear of the car on the front portion of the rear fender well. Again, it looks completely repairable. Inside the wagon, the plate on which the rear view mirror and visors are attached is rusty and will eventually need to be replaced.The front bumper shows some damage on the driver's side, and the rear bumper and parts of the roof rack have been painted with aluminum paint.Seals for the sliding rear roof were recently removed and will need to be replaced. They can be purchased for about $95 online at Studebaker International. Overall, a great candidate for restoration and a driver in the meantime.
