This 1969 Shelby GT500 is very original. It’s a true survivor. Original paint and interior. I purchased it in 2013 from the original owner. He purchased the car from Koons Ford in Falls Church Virginia and later brought it to Houston. When I purchased the car it had been sitting in his garage, (not running) since 1985! This car has 63,386 original miles, original paint and interior – including the carpet.

This Shelby was featured on Bringatrailer in 2013 at the time I purchased it : Link to Bring a Trailer

I found this car on Ebay in 2013. It was for sale locally here in Houston, Texas by the original owner and his son. The son listed it on eBay but they were taking offers. I had a conversation with them and the more I heard about the Shelby, the more I really wanted it. The original owner purchased the car after returning from Vietnam. He babied the car and never raced it. It was equipped with an automatic so maybe they just used it for cruising. The car was parked in the 80’s because of water pump and heater core issues. I loved the story about this 69 Shelby GT500 and needed to act fast if I was going to be the new owner. I arranged to go see the car the very next day. Early that Saturday morning a friend and I went to the owner’s house. I brought a flat bed hauler and a mechanic as well.

Once the garage opened, I was amazed. The original paint had a shine and the original interior was like new! The engine bay needed a bit of clean up and of course the car did not run. The car had boxes all around it that the owner had removed prior to us showing up…. and all four tires were flat (I had arranged to bring a set of “roller” wheels and tires, since they told me about this). The owner eventually agreed to sell me the car because I had made the highest offer of anyone they had spoken with.

As my mechanic backed up the car hauler and then started replacing the wheels to roll the car on the truck, my friend and I made a short video, interviewing the original owner and showing the car leaving the garage:

After getting the car back home, I decided to make the Shelby roadworthy but I had no intention of re-painting the car since the paint was original and happens to be a rare special order color, “Competition Red”. Over the next few months I ended up having the engine and transmission both rebuilt by S&S on Frick Rd. - right here in Houston. The engine, transmission and brakes were gone through. There are receipts for other work as well, totaling nearly $15,000 (those receipts and dyno tests are shown in the auction photos). I also had the factory A/C serviced. I wanted the car to be roadworthy for sure, yet retain its original paint. The engine block is dated 1967 and appears to be a replacement. This car is in a private collection and is not any kind of distressed sale, have a clear Texas Title in my name. This car is 1 of 33 Calypso Coral( Special Paint!) I have decided to sell it to the next care taker after nearly 10 years of ownership!

I ALSO FOUND THE ORIGINAL BUILD SHEET! I subsequently ordered the Deluxe Mari report and other documents shown below:

There are very few unrestored 1969 Shelby GT500 cars in existence and they rarely come to market. This car is extremely rare and unique. It’s one of only 33 made in “Competition Red” and only 1 of 17 with factory air-conditioning. The car comes with both the original Texas license plates ‘ENV 89’ and all documentation shown, including the listing in the SAAC Shelby Registry.

Many of these unique muscle cars of the 60’s are all about history, a time when automotive design and power came to its peak. Collecting these special cars is all about the story….and this 1969 Shelby GT500 certainly has one. You will be hard pressed to find another 1969 Shelby with a story and history like this, especially one with original paint and in this special order color. Good luck with the auction. Feel free to contact me for more info., I would be happy to answer any questions about this rare and unique 1969 Shelby GT500……..Charlie (713) 825-9567
