Beginning in 1967, a mildly modified Police Interceptor 428 V-8 infused the Shelby Mustang with big-block power to create the new GT500, but the hot 428 Cobra Jet upped the ante from 1968. The CJ, originally developed by Tasca Ford at the suggestion of the Hot Rod magazine editor, included a pair of 427 low-riser cylinder heads, 735-cfm Holley 4-barrel carburetor, and many internal improvements courtesy of Fords parts stocks. CJ-powered Mustangs swept Super Stock competition at the 1968 NHRA Winternationals, where they were strong and reliable performers with immense torque and 335 under-rated factory horsepower. On the street, the 428 CJ developed a fearsome reputation and powered a number of Ford performance cars, including the increasingly upscale GT500 through 1969-1970. Shelbys GT500 always retained a unique identity and for 1969, featured a longer fiberglass front end, unique hoop grille, updated taillights and revised exhaust outlets, plus an aggressive hood with no less than five functional NACA-style air scoops. Front and rear air scoops ducted cool air to the brakes and inside, a roll bar, inertia-reel racing harnesses, luxurious amenities, and special trim maintained the performance-oriented, limited-production character of the GT 500. The 1969 GT500 is quite rare with only 1,157 Fastbacks produced according to records from SAAC, the Shelby American Automobile Club.
Freshly restored down to the nut and bolt by Tony Conovers Performance Motors in Hanover, Pennsylvania to full concours-correct standards, this 1969 Shelby GT500 features stunning Candy Apple Red paint over Black knit vinyl upholstery and high-back front bucket seats, The legendary 428 Cobra Jet V-8 engine is matched to a Toploader close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, driving a Traction-Lok rear axle with 3.50:1 ring and pinion. Other choice highlights include an AM radio, power front disc brakes, power steering, and a Sport Deck fold-down rear seat. Just 200 miles have been covered since the restoration was competed. Accompanied by a Marti Report, original Shelby invoice and work order, this 1969 GT500 is simply stunning and factory-original in condition, beautifully marking the last generation of original Shelby mustang production.
