1966 Shelby Cobra Supercharged Nitrous Must see
1966 Shelby Cobra
For sale is a 1966 Shelby Cobra replica. Supercharged fuel injected 302…. on Nitrous.
I have been building hot rods for over 25 years and this is my crown jewel. Even as a kid I always dreamed of having a Shelby Cobra and when I finally built one it met all my expectations, and then some. I started off this project by doing a ton of research and driving several different cobras and have built what I feel is the perfect cobra, and now it can by yours. In all my test drives of different cobras I learned that a cobra with a big block has way too much weight on the front end, it suffers from poor handling and acceleration due to the heavy bias weight on the front end and not enough weight on the rear tires, and a high horsepower small block actually out accelerated a big block and had far better handling and mileage. I’ve driven the “600hp” 427+ci Cobras and it’s like driving on ice, they never get traction because they are so front end heavy. If you want a Burn Out Queen they are fine, if you want neck snapping acceleration, go with a forced induction small block. So I decided to build a supercharged 302 on nitrous for mine. It ended up with a 54% rear / 46% front weight distribution.
After visiting their facility, my manufacture of choice was Shell Valley due to attention to detail and dedication to customer satisfaction. Now on to the details:
It’s a tubular frame with a double wish-bone front suspension and a triangulated 4-link in the rear. 11” Wilwood drilled and slotted rotors all around with 4-piston Wilwood Dynalite calipers gives it unheard of stopping power. Boyd Codington made a custom set of 17” billet aluminum wheels for it and they have Goodyear Eagle F1 tires on it for a one-of-a-kind look and performance to match. It has power steering on it for a light nimble feel, especially when driving slow and taking turns where cobras without it took a fair amount of arm strength to turn. The seats are high back leather and the center console is wrapped in a snake skin which gave it a unique look and the seats are very comfortable to sit in.
Now for the drivetrain. It’s a highly modified fuel injected ford 302 with forged 9.5 pistons, H-beam rods, ARP head and main studs and stud girdle. This rotating assemble is bullet proof. The AFR 185 aluminum heads allow the supercharger to breath to its full extent, which is the top of the line Kennebell 2.2L “Blowzilla/Flowzilla” supercharger. It comes with 8, 10, and 12 psi pulleys. This supercharger is at full boost around 1800rpm! This car literally feels like a 600ci motor without all the extra weight…a perfect combo.
The car also comes with an extra set of rims with slicks on it in case you want to go drag racing, which is where the nitrous kit comes in handy. The nitrous kit is very hidden and is a Zex unit. It has a pressure controlled bottle heater and a remoter bottle opener so on those unexpected occasions where nitrous is needed, it’s a couple of button pushes away. When the system is armed it automatically is triggered when the throttle body sensor is over 75% and the rpm is over 2500. The horn seconds as a nitrous purge when the system is armed.
The transmission is a custom built Lentech “Street Terminator Plus”, which is a modified Ford AOD (Automatic Overdrive) unit. You also get it with one of their custom 9.5” stall convertors made specifically for this car. I asked them for a transmission I never have to worry about and that is what they recommended. I went with an automatic because a manual transmission got really old very quick when driving around mainly due to the lack of adequate leg room for a clutch pedal. With the “hammer” shifter you can still have the manual feel by manually shifting the gears, but you don’t need to use a clutch pedal; or just put it in Drive and forget about it.
I mentioned its fuel injected, well it’s not just a factory computer with a hack job tune in it. It is a Megasquirt MSPnP aftermarket standalone CPU. It’s awesome. I love these controllers. It uses all of the factory sensors but you are able to completely customize the tune. Just download the free software on a laptop and connect to it (not that you need to because the tune in it is solid), but in case you wanted to make some changes to the combination it would be easy. The CPU also has a data logging feature so for instance if you’re racing it and wanted to make some tune changes in the pits all the data from the previous run is recorded. Probably the key feature with the tune is it is a flex fuel car, meaning it will run on regular pump gas or if your want the extra benefits of E85 with force induction just fill up with E85 and gain horsepower, that easy. With the flex fuel sensor any mixture of regular pump gas and E85 the CPU will automatically adjust the tune for it. This way no matter what pulley is on the supercharger, what mixture of fuel, or what jets are in the nitrous kit, one tune automatically adjusts for all of it.
The fuel system to support this horsepower level on E85 is a dual Walbro 455lph intake fuel pump setup mounted in sumps of an aluminum gas tank. I had issues early on with my first gas tank with fuel slosh issues where it would starve the pumps during acceleration and cornering, with the new gas tank and sumps it will runs great down to a couple gallons of gas.
I also put a Vintage Air heater in it to take the chill out of those cool evenings. It works surprisingly well for an open top car. This car also comes with a leather removable top and a tonneau cover, which I never did install but all the hardware is there.
This is a worry free car. I have 8139miles on it and love driving it around; even my wife and I will fight occasionally on who gets to take it to work. I have $63,269.21 worth of receipts and that’s only the ones I kept, that’s obviously not including my labor. I would line this car up against any street driven Shelby Cobra on the planet and feel confident. I had this car at the drag strip once a long time ago, before the 12 psi pulley, nitrous, and slicks and it went 10.88 in the ¼” mile. I don’t know what it would do now. I always meant to take it again but the nearest track now is over 3 hours away and never got around to it. Oh, and it gets 22 miles per gallon if you’re interested.
I personally built this car and know every nut and bolt on it, so if you need to know extra details just ask.
If you want a one of kind car, get a cobra. If you want a one of a kind Cobra, GET THIS ONE.
