1968 SHELBY GT500KR, Rare, Highly Original, (For Sale by Owner), NO RESERVE!
1968 Shelby GT500KR Fastback
1968 SHELBY COBRA GT500KR (King of the Road) Rare, ighly Original, ery Early KR Production. (For Sale by Owner) NO RESERVE! If you are looking for a very nice, olid, reat looking, riginal 428 Cobra Jet GT500KR Shelby Cobra loaded with the 1968 Shelby options and fairly low mileage, hen this is the Shelby for you. I would describe this Shelby as an Occasional Driver show car; it is not a Concours/Trailered Shelby, ut it wouldn’t take much to put it in that condition. This KR currently has approx. 105,000 original miles on it. I’ve driven this Shelby to local car shows and used it in Parades, ord Dealership displays, roduct Advertisements, nd an occasional cruise around town; it’s just a blast to drive. I’ve owned this Shelby for almost 14 years and it is one of the most fun, ttention getting cars you can drive. No matter where you go in it, ou will get noticed and a crowd seems to gather; it’s a huge hit at car shows. This Shelby will burn out in first gear, chirp” as it shifts into 2nd gear and gets from 0-100mph very fast; it was one of the fastest cars on the road in its prime. I’ve owned many Mustangs over the past 40+ years, his is one of the best Mustangs/Shelby’s I’ve ever driven. It runs very smooth, hifts great, nd the factory A/C blows very cold. This KR is in the Shelby Registry and I’ve been an active member of the Mustang Club of America (MCA) for over 37 years and served on their Board of Directors. During the short 9-month production of all 1968 Shelby’s, he GT500KR’s even had a more limited production with only a 3-month production run (May, une, uly of 1968); this KR was scheduled for build on 8 May 1968, er SAAC the first KR was scheduled for build on 7 May 1968 (no known documentation on what order fastbacks and convertibles were built), his KR was actually built April 29th, 968 (nine days ahead of schedule) and was shipped to Southside Motor Company, acksonville, lorida. This is one of the first KR’s to be built, of only 933 KR fastbacks produced and only 1 of 299 Acapulco Blue ordered like this with Air Conditioning, ho knows how many are still around? The limited production KR’s had the new potent 428 Cobra Jet motors which most folks knew pushed over 400 horsepower. This KR still has its original drivetrain (428 Cobra Jet Motor, 6 Auto Transmission, ifferential, arburetor, tc.). It also has all its correct identification tags, .g. VINs/Ser #’s: fender stamp/s, ash tag, ngine bay vehicle build tag, otor tag, oor data plate, tc. Most of the parts are original and/or correct for this car. The sheet metal on this Shelby is very straight with no rust that I’ve ever found. Even the original steering wheel Tilt-Away system performs perfectly, o do the Shelby Inertia shoulder harness seatbelts, nd the original PHILCO AM Radio (if you can find an AM station anymore). LOADED SHELBY FACTORY OPTIONS: GT equipment Group, ower Steering, ower Front Disk Brakes/10” Rear Drums, eavy Duty 3.50:1 Differential, .D. Front/Rear Suspension, actory Padded Roll Bar w/inertia Reel Aircraft Shoulder Harnesses, unctional Ram-Air Hood, olley 735 CFM/4V Carburetor, port Deck Fold Down Rear Seat, 40mph Speedometer, achometer, lock, ilt-Away Padded Steering Wheel, ustom Production Shelby Console w/ S.W. Oil Pressure/Amp Gauges, eluxe Comfort Weave Seats, ucas Quartz Halogen Fog Lamps w/Covers, nd the Wood Grain Interior Décor Group.ADDITIONAL FACTORY OPTIONS ON THIS “KING OF THE ROAD”: C6 Automatic Transmission (as most 1968 Shelby’s were), electaire-Air Conditioner, un-X Tinted Glass, 0-Spoke Shelby 15x7 Aluminum Wheels, nd AM Radio. This Shelby was lightly undercoated I would guess back in the late 1960’s/70’s (normal for those days/Ziebart) which protected the original underside sheet metal wonderfully. The floor pans, ear quarters, runk panels, tc., ll look to be original to this car with no rust. The exterior of this car is very straight with no door dings, o rust, nd the paint really shines; I also believe the interior is highly original to this car. Work performed on this Shelby Cobra since I’ve owned it, 1 Years: (I always try to keep the original parts where possible and put items back to factory specs)
Exterior repainted original Acapulco Blue with painted on White Shelby LeMans Stripes (2003) and still looks great (Base Coat/Clear Coat).
Differential/Rear End exterior completely refreshed; Brake Calipers w/new Rotors and all new pads; Suspension: Upper/Lower A-frames, ontrol Arm, dler Arm, ll Power Steering components with new hoses; Complete original Air Conditioning System with correct hardware (Compressor, ryer, ondenser, vaporator) with all new factory style hoses and hardware (works great and blows very cold), ompressor still has original tag; freshened correct Ford Blue paint on motor; installed new 4-row core on original radiator tanks still showing original part #’s with original fan blade and working fan clutch (never overheats); Holley 735CFM Carb rebuilt to factory specs, e-dyed and stamped.
Replaced the original “old” factory dual exhaust (had hole in muffler) with a great sounding Flowmaster exhaust (dual mufflers), he factory headers are original to the car; used existing or made new brackets for proper fit, o cutting, drilling, rbody modifications were done to install aftermarket exhaust. Parts are available for the original style factory exhaust through Shelby/Mustang Parts Distributors. I will also include the original chrome KR exhaust tips that came on this car (they need re-chroming).
Installed Monroe Air Shocks on the rear (front shocks are original type) with no cutting, drilling, r body modificationsto the car. Shelby’s are known for sitting low in the rear, liked the car to look level; easy to re-install factory style rear shocks.
Minor known maintenance issues: the rear main seal has a very small oil leak (as typical of all cars that set up and are not driven regularly); right exhaust manifold has small leak which becomes pretty much unnoticeable once motor heats up; a previous owner made a small fiberglass patch repair on the underside of the hood (looks like someone forgot it was a fiberglass hood) and as with most old cars, he dash clock stopped working a few years ago, his can be repaired easily.
I have some original paperwork on this Shelby showing previous owner/s which will be included with the sale, lus plenty of historical paperwork on the GT500KR Shelbys.
One of the previous owner’s had the Glove Box Door and the Owner’s Manual autographed by Carroll Shelby himself.
I’ve attached a photo of the historical MARTI Report on this GT500KR (the original will also be included with the sale).
I understand the rarity and value of these great cars and this KR being one of the first and in its very nice condition is priced very conservative. But, also believe folks have different views in whether to drive them or use them as show trailered cars. So, ’m leaving the flexibility for someone that would like to take this KR to the concours trailered level to have the funding to do that and to fix any minor issues. This Shelby looks and runs great just as it is, s Carroll Shelby always said, these cars were meant to be driven”. This is why I’ve priced my Shelby at a very reasonable price with No Reserve! I’m only selling this Shelby because at my age, t’s time for someone else to enjoy the great pleasures of owning an original ’68 GT500 King of the Road. These Shelby’s also make a great investment (better than the Stock Market).
