1974 Saab Sonett III - original paint
1974 Saab Sonett
What's better than 3 Scandinavian women comforting each others in the Sauna? Nothing of course.
However, i'm selling my 1974 Saab Sonett III.
I have owned this car for 8 years, since May 2016, and i have maybe put 8000miles on the engine.
The Sonett is a super light weight car, due to the fiberglass body, and the engine is comparably small with 1.7l. It's a very unique car with a german engine (Ford Taunus) and Italian and Swedish design... great combination.
It behaves very childish, it likes to zoom through the twisties, and the V4 engine has a great sound... the drag coefficient of the Sonett III is 0.31! (If you're on a highway downhill and you take the gear out, this car is going to keep getting faster until you brake)
It is very easy to misjudge the size of the car in photos: it is smaller in person. I can easily extend both my hands out of both of the windows left and right. But I'm 6'3 and i fit comfortably inside. My head only touches the ceiling if i try to sit exaggeratedly upright.
Everybody (i mean EVERYBODY) is going to stop and ask you "what year is that car?" and when you're on a crosswalk and kids walk by, they can't take their eyes off the car, and love it when i pull the headlights up!! The Sonett brings a lot of smiles to the people around you. If you park the car in a "fashionable" area, it'll appear on all the social media channels shortly after, that's why i put a hashtag into the windows #nycsonett ;)
Here's a video so you can get a feel for the car: https://vimeo.com/935986271
Since i owned the car, i have done these ameliorations:
-New brake rotors front-Upholstered seats-Hidden bluetooth Audio (Out of sight MkII) with 3 pretty fun speakers-123ignition + electric ignition with bluetooth insights (really cool)-New clutch and resurfaced flywheel-Nardi wooden steering wheel (original steering wheel is available)-hidden magnetic phone holder (see last photo)-new shocks-new headliner with Polka dots-new fuel pump
The engine is a 4-stroke engine (Saab Sonett II was still 2-stroke!), and some previous owner put a Weber carb and a two in one exhaust on there, and i'm not mad at all, the sound is epic.
2 things that were on my list to repair: Odometer and Fuel level Gauge. Hence my suspicion that i've done about ~1000 miles per year. The Odometer has been stuck at 83767 miles since i own the car. There's a red light in the dashboard warning you when the fuel level goes low. Also the tank is very big, and i always added lead substitute to the gas for happy valves. A few bottles of substitute come with the car.
Also there's a ding in the right side passenger door, which i didn't mind enough to repair, and the passenger side lock can only be operated from the inside of the car.
The electrical wiring of the car was a mess when i bought it, and i cleaned up quite a lot, to my capacities.
And finally: I'm selling because my wife and i bought a 1980s campervan. If i had more space i'd absolutely keep the Sonett.. but i would rather want someone else to enjoy it.
Feel free to ask questions and text me or call me: 917 855 2878 I can take more photos if desired.
Have fun bidding. Marian
