This Porsche 914 was a joint development between Porsche and Volkswagen. It became the new Porsche entry level model when first entering the market in 1970. This two-seater is a running mid-engine sports car. This car was assembled by the German coachbuilder Karmann.Striking design features include the very long wheelbase for the vehicle length and short overhangs. The removable roof center panel is made from fiberglass reinforced plastic. Additionally, it has a safety bar. Pop-up headlights are another interesting feature.Engine - the engine is a 1.8 liter flat-four engine with 85 hp. The transaxle is similar to the 911's but the housing is different due to the 914's mid-mounted engine.Steering - a three piece column shaft incorporating universal joints connected to a light action rack-and-pinion steering. It offers a very light and accurate feel. The ratio is 17.8:1 or three turns to lock.Brakes - disk brakes at all four corners. Additionally, a self adjusting hand brake connected to the rear wheels.Interior - sports car style bucket seats in leatherette. Forward and back adjustment plus four different height and tilt positions.Instrument panel - speedometer with trip mileage odometer and transistorized tachometer. The combined instrument dial has warning lights for oil pressure, battery voltage and fuel gauge.Luggage - there are two separate luggage compartments in the 914. One in the front and one in the rear. The combined storage capacity is 16.2 cubic feet.Hardtop - the rear compartment also serves as a storage area for the removable fiberglass hardtop.
