Automotive magazines touted it as the fastest 4-cylinder in the world. Back to back track tests against the Porsche 930 showed that the 944 Turbo S was actually faster…and half the price (still nearly $50,000 U.S. new). Porsche rightfully proclaimed: “Not since the 911 Turbo have we transferred a race car so directly into a road car.” These Turbo S cars were a direct descendent of Porsche’s 944 Turbo Cup racing program.
ALL US spec 944 turbos in 1989 were of the same mechanical specification as the 1988 Turbo S package cars, including the 247hp M44/52 engine with a larger #8 turbocharger hot side, heavy duty AOR transmission with upgraded locking differential, specific ECU calibration, M030 suspension (height adjustable Koni front coil overs, larger medium black Brembo front brakes, unique and stronger front spindles with larger bearings and radial brake caliper mounts, larger sway bars, higher durometer bushings w/green paint markings, shock tower to front frame rail braces, factory rolled fender lips and more.
the S has a bigger turbo, bigger brakes, stronger gearbox and better suspension. In 89, those improvements were incorporated into the standard turbo.
