Description:
1966 Porsche 912
This 1966 Porsche 912 is being listed with NO RESERVE. This car is being sold by the wife of owner who passed away two years ago.He owned the car over two decades in Las Vegas. Limited records from previous owners place the car in Las Vegas since at least the early 1990's. Due to the lack of corrosion, it is quite possible the car has resided in a desert climate from new. Please contact me if you would like more photos.EXTERIOR
The exterior of this 912 shows quite well. It was recently repainted, though exact dates and receipts are not available due to the previous owner's untimely passing. I believe the car was originally Polo Red, but the red repaint appears to be more similar to the later Guards Red color. Nevertheless, the single stage repaint shows well and details such as the drip rails on the roof show a good level of care was taken during the repaint. The paint does have some flaws on the hood, decklid, left rear bumper and some scratches on flat surfaces where boxes had been placed while the car had been stored during the last couple of years. Other flaws are documented in the photos.
The placard on the driver door jam was not replaced after the painting process. Note the lack of corrosion under the floor mats. The glass is all original except for the windshield and is in excellent condition. The rear glass seal and molding was recently replaced prior to the auction. Chrome trim is slightly pitted in some places as documented in the photos. Wheels are authentic 15" x 6" Fuchs with 1975 date codes and correct center caps. These are a nice period upgrade, and wear brand new Dunlop SP Sport 5000 tires replaced last month. The spare wheel is the correct 15" x 4.5" steel wheel with a 1965 date code and wears a new Federal tire in 165/80. Repair work was done at some point to the front of the tub underneath the battery box. There is evidence of repair to the suspension mounting in the front part of the tub, though it looks to have been completed to a decent level. The rockers show some damage from floor jacks over the years, but otherwise the car is quite clean underneath.
INTERIOR
The interior of this 912 has some modifications from original but retains the period correct look. A new headliner was installed in perforated black vinyl along with a full black carpet set by the owner. The seats appear to be from a later car, due to the style of headrests, but still have nice, soft vinyl without any rips or tears. Three point, retractable seatbelts were also added. These use stock mounting holes and could be deleted or replaced if so desired. A new, proper back panel was recently installed, along with luggage strap clamps. The dashboard has been recovered at some point. The aluminum dash trim was recently replaced along with a stereo delete.
The steering wheel is a brand new Momo Heritage Prototipo. At the time of install, the steering column bushing was also replaced and there is no play in the column. The shift knob was recently replaced with a Porsche part. Interestingly, a previous owner had power locks with keyless entry installed in the mid 90's. It works perfectly and a single remote is included. The front trunk has new carpets, the original Bilstein jack with handle and a lug wrench. There is no tool kit. No rust is evident in the smugglers box area. Hood and decklid struts were just replaced.
MECHANICAL
The engine in this 912 is from a later model car and was replaced by the current owner at some point. No records exist as to whether it is a stock motor or higher displacement. Weber 40 idf carburetors with K&N filters are installed on the motor. In addition, an electric fuel pump was also added. The car does run and drive, but has not been registered for quite some time. The carburetors were recently disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled. Some assorted jets are included, and it would be wise to have an expert get everything dialed in. I have driven it around my neighborhood and done some adjusting of the carbs, but there is definitely an art to the Webers!
The oil and filter cartridge were recently changed with Valvoline VR1 20w-50, and one oil line off the filter housing replaced. The 901 4 speed transaxle was drained and refilled with Swepco 201. It is unknown if this is the original unit to the car. A new fuel tank was installed at some point, and the battery was replaced in May.
The brakes will need some attention before the car is roadworthy. The car pulls to the right under hard braking. In addition, I believe the brake pressure switch will need to be replaced, as the brake lights do not illuminate when the pedal is depressed. The reverse lights are also inoperative. I believe this is related to the tail light wiring, as there are two wires from the passenger tail light with ring terminals that I believe are grounds for the tail lights. This could also be the cause of the brake light issues.
The wipers, headlights (high and low beams), tail lights, and turn signals all work properly. The parking brake and dash lights work as well. The fuel gauge and temperature gauge are not operating, however, the indicator lights in that left side gauge are working. Tachometer and speedometer are functioning properly. The suspension is a bit tired and there is a slight clunk in the right front.
