Description:

1985 Porsche 944 NA

This 1985 Porsche 944 was sold new in California where it has stayed its entire life. The car is finished in Guards Red over a black interior and powered by a 2.5L inline-four paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. It was acquired by the seller in January 2018. This 944 shows 31k miles and is offered with service records, and a clean California title in the seller's name. Seller reports that this car has been garaged the entire time of his ownership and being a California vehicle there is no rust present.
The body is finished in Guards Red, and the paintwork is shown up close in the gallery below. Factory 15 inch "cookie cutter" wheels feature black centers with painted Porsche crest and polished lips and are fitted with Yokohama tires. Seller had new windshield professionally installed and is in perfect condition. Headlights have been upgraded to replaceable H4 style. Amber fog light bulbs installed. DME relays often fail on 944s, leaving the driver stranded, owner installed a Focus9 solid state relay (with Pump Prime) that will never wear out or need replacement. New Optima (sealed) battery has been equipped.
Seller removed gas tank and replaced cracked hoses which were causing a gas smell. With transaxle removed, Only944 shifting components were added, drained and filled transaxle fluid, repacked and replaced rear CV joints. Aftermarket exhaust system gives a nice throaty sound. These old 944s came with a spare tire that needed inflating --- owner purchased a modern Porsche 911 spare tire that is always inflated and ready to go if needed.
The black interior features custom made perforated seat covers from Only944, a vintage MOMO D36 steering wheel, and a Blaupunkt stereo with Bluetooth built in. This is the "early version" of the 944, which had a mid-year change in 1985, so it has the "square" dash. VDO gauges include a 5-digit odometer showing 31k miles, approximately 1,000 of which have been added by the seller. Internal clock works as do all the gauges. Electric windows, sunroof, side mirrors and antenna all work as they should. Internal light bulbs have been upgraded to LED. Original interior was tan, owner changed interior to all black by replacing and repainting some items.
Previous owner reported that they performed major service 2,000 miles before current owner took ownership (3,000 miles ago). This included new timing belt, new clutch, new mass air flow sensor, and serviced the fuel injectors. However, documentation only exists for the injector servicing and mass air flow sensor. Porsche 944s have a clutch disc wear window so that you can easily see how much life is left in the clutch, and this shows the clutch is new.
Rubber trim around sunroof shows small signs that the car was repainted at some point. There are small chips in the paint and a discoloration on the hood of the vehicle that is visible in the right (or wrong) lighting. Owner reports that the front bumper lower valance could use paint touched up. Also heater and A/C do not function. Cruise control module and wiring has been removed as it did not function. Carfax is clean except for mileage inconsistency, suggesting the odometer was replaced at some point - though odometer does work. Small paint chips and touchups are present, as well as some small dings, see photos.
Owner took vehicle to a local independent shop that focuses on German vehicles (Frank's Automotive in Sacramento CA) for a pre-purchase inspection in December 2018. Their report identified a small list of issues, some of which the owner has already addressed in preparation for sell:
Items owner fixed:
· Brake fluid needs to be flushed - done
· Rear license plate bulb burned out - replaced
· Light bulbs behind left gauge cluster burned out - replaced

Items still needing attention:
· Replace coolant
· Windshield washer pump doesn't work
· No heat or air conditioning
· Small "click" sound from front suspension when coming to a stop - intermittent/not ongoing
· Front right wheel bearing needs servicing

This car gets admiring looks and compliments wherever it's driven. It won't win concours competitions, but it is a very nice example of a 33 year old Porsche 944. Vehicle has never left owner stranded or failed to start. Vintage California "Sunset" plates are period correct and a nice addition to this fine German automobile and can be transferred to new owner if so desired.

Will come with two keys, Porsche key fob and all documentation from items added by current owner.
