1976 Porsche 914

We are selling a 1976 Porsche 914. This was the last year and fewest in number made of the 914s. It has the original 2.0 motor tho it has been greatly modified (details below).

I know the term “barn find” gets abused so I’ll call this one a true garage find. In 1987 this car was used as a daily driver till it dropped a valve and destroyed a piston and cylinder head. The car was subsequently parked in a garage where it remained in a dry and controlled climate for 27 years. I purchased the car three years ago and began the task of breathing life back into this car.

I had the car repainted the original color and the seats reupholstered. The rest of the vinyl and carpet are original. The dash has a crack in it but I have a cover on the dash and it look good. The radio is the original AM/FM radio and it works great. The previous owner had a sun roof professionally installed. I personally like it but if you don’t I have another untouched targa top for free. In the center console I replaced the clock and the terrible and numberless oil temp gauge with a precise digital cylinder head temp gauge and a digital wide band air/fuel ratio gauge.

The car still has its original and functional dealer installed AC (compressor replaced). The air-conditioning works great even in this east TX heat. This car does not have a functional heater. The heat exchangers were replaced with headers to minimize performance losses. I have the early design heat exchangers with the heater control flaps for free if you’d like to regain a heater but you’ll have to get a muffler that mates properly.

The engine is the original numbers-matching engine but it has been completely transformed. Now sporting 2.27 liters the horsepower has been likely almost doubled.

The motor was modeled after the rigorously tested and proven Jake Raby 2270cc motor. It IS NOT a Jake Raby motor but was modeled after the well documented and available formula for power that is posted on various 914 and VW forums. The engine is a beautiful balance of power and dependability. It has original three bolt uniquely-porsche cylinder heads. I took great steps to make sure that this engine is protected from running lean or running hot. The digital wide band air/fuel ratio gauge shows the fuel mixture is safe, and an additional oil cooler with fan keeps the engine cool. The accurate and actual temp of the cylinder head can be monitored by a digital gauge also.

The engine does not smoke but it will leave a drop of oil after parked for a while. The transmission works great and doesn’t slip, grind, or make noise. I wouldn’t be afraid to drive this car anywhere.

This car performs great. I do not flog this car but it is fas, it is an extremely fun car to drive, and is amazing in the corners with little to no body role. It can also be trust as a daily commuter if you wish.

The paint job isn’t perfect with a few blemishes but overall looks great. There is no significant rust on this car. Only light surface film rust (shown in pics) on the belly. The car is solid

This is a great chance to own a fast air/cooled porsche. The prices are only going up and are not showing signs of cooling off. This car is going go at a low reserve. Whoever wins this auction will get it at a price that is far cheaper than it cost to build it up to this level.

Price does not include state or local taxes if any. Although every effort is made to present accurate and reliable information, it is the responsibility of the buyer to validate wether by independent appraisal or personal examination that the car is as presented.
