1955 Porsche 550 Spyder

GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder Beck Replica for purchase. The Porsche 550 Spyder is quite possibly the most recognizable competition based car produced. Actively participating in the European and US Championships as early as 1953 to 1965 the 550 variants recorded an astounding 95 overall victories along with 75 class wins in 370 starts. Its low wide stance along with its impressive power to weight the 550 Spyder dominated against more powerful cars above its ...class. Actor / Driver James Dean affectionately described the car as "The Giant Killer". Dean died in a fatal accident in his 550 Spyder "Little Bastard" September 30 1955. The everlasting popularity of these caused the creation of replicas for enthusiasts to enjoy. That's where Chuck Beck comes in. Beck has made a name for himself in the building of some of the best engineered and built Spyder replicas around. Unlike a number of other 550 replica makers who tend to use a VW pan and requisite rear-mounted engine Beck builds his own frame out of 3" DOM tubing and the engine (VW or Subie) is then mounted amidships just like Dean's original. This is one of the early Beck's with an original hand-written bill of sale in 1989 in Tuscon Arizona. The chassis is badged #127 and was last purchased in California and since used sparingly as a summer toy. It's powered by the 1914cc inline 4-cylinder Volkswagen air-cooled engine and Freeway Flyer 4-speed manual transmission with the assist from the legendary Dellorto carb. This example fires right up and is a lot of fun to drive in a lightweight nimble package. The historic legendary look adds to the joy the next owner receives as part of this purchase! We also have some of the original documentation and brochures! Please call or email for more details! To see over 80 photos of this car including under carriage please visit our website
