Description:

1986 Porsche 928 S

Let me begin by stating I hope no one decides to buy this car. My reason for saying this is that I do not really want to sell it. It is a great car and has been in my family for nearly 18 years as my father purchased it from the prior owner in North Carolina. If you are looking for a $10,000-12,000 928s, this is not the one for you. If you are looking for a shark with complete documentation (original window sticker), all service records and one that has been mechanically restored by 928 specialists with only factory parts, keep reading...
I will attempt to describe this car in the most accurate way possible, but if you have any questions I did not address here please feel free to call me at (304)741-0948. I live in Charlotte North Carolina about 10 minutes from Charlotte Douglas airport. Below is a breakdown of some of the $25,000 restoration work I have had done over the past 12 months. All service history has been sorted by date in a four inch manila binder. The only Charlotte specialists to have worked on the car are Jim Burton at Hendrick Porsche, Touring Car in Matthews, Eurowise and a Porsche Specialist friend who is also the Porsche crew chief for Core Motorsports. All parts were either ordered from 928 International, 928 Motorsports, 928srus or Pelican Parts. If you require a PPI, I will be happy to accommodate you. I have only used Mobile 1 15w50 full synthetic on the car and changed oil every 2,000 miles. A few additional options per the build-sheet are a factory widened track real axle, Limited Slip Differential (LSD) and protective side moldings.
As for the driving experience, this car is exceptional. There are no squeaks or rattling, the suspension is on point and the engine is exceptionally strong and all stock with the exception of a K&N filter. It is an incredible driver and while in great shape for a 33-year old Bavarian GT touring car, it is not a perfect show car. Back to the restoration...
In May of 2016, the foremost 928 specialist in the Carolinas named Jim Burton replaced all the belts, hoses, timing belts, Laso water pump, tensioner, harmonic balancer, control arms, Moog ball joints, tie rods, rear coilover shocks, all fluids, fuel filter and fuel pump, all axle boots, CV joints, installed tires with V-rated Michelin Pilot Sports and all brake shoes at a cost of over $9,000 including parts.
Eurowise in the past 6-months have replaced the brake rotors with Zimmerman slotted rotors and Pagid pads. They also replaced the power steering rack and aligned the car perfectly. Both repairs including parts exceeded $2000.
Last month, I spent $2400 on a top end intake refresh at Touring Car and also replaced the oil lines feeding the radiator as a preventive measure. In February, Touring Car also replaced and resealed the oil pan with a silicon gasket, replaced engine mounts and replaced both Valve Cover Gaskets for an additional $2200. In July of last year I replaced the A/C compressor, A/C pressure switch and drier at a cost of $1400. I have new factory porsches A/C lines that run into the compressor that are scheduled to be installed this week and recharged with R-12 at Hovis Radiator.
In February, I had the entire transmission, differential and torque tube converter rebuilt by Advanced Transmissions in Mauldin, South Carolina at a cost of $2,707. This work has a 2-year 24,000 mile warranty and all transmission vacuum lines were replaced at this time as well.
My crew chief friend installed a new battery, brake master cylinder, stainless steel brake lines, front hood struts, bosch spark plug wires, bosch hi-flow injectors, bosch ignition wires and distributors, oil filter and all fuel lines were replaced by Roger Tyson's teflon coated lines, all these costs were in excess of $3000.
There are too many other odds and ends that have been done to note in this posting, but again, call me with any specific questions.
The paint and interior are, to my knowledge, original and unrestored with the exception of the stereo. I installed a new JVC bluetooth CD head unit and replaced almost every factory speaker with kicker speakers and there is an amplified bazooka tube in the trunk (pictured). Yes, I also have the original blaupunkt that is included. The paint is very strong for a 33-year old car and there is minor oxidation on the roof, protective side moldings and surface scratching on rear left bumper (this can likely be polished out). I cannot find any dents or dings in the body work. The seats are still good with only minor imperfections as with any Porsche vinyl dash of this era, there is some surface cracking. All of the power switches work and I also have 4-new switches that are included with the sale if you choose to replace them. Power mirror on driver's side does not work and power locks need repair (I will include to 400 amp fuses and new central locking module with sale.) Overall, the car has great patina.
If you are still reading this you are probably as obsessed with the 928 as I am. If you buy this car, you know what you are getting and will enjoy this shark for years to come. Thanks for looking. Shawn
