Evolve Motors is pleased to present this 1988 Porsche 959 Cabriolet Replica!
This car began life as an ‘88 3.2 Carrera finished in Grand Prix White over tan leather, residing in Las Vegas before eventually being sold to Kentucky, then to us in Chicago. This 959 Cabriolet is definitely hard to keep your eyes off of. We will be the first to admit that a bastardized 911 can certainly make you scratch your head as to why anyone would modify such a great car. The answer is simple. At some point early in its life there was a claim on the insurance that exceeded the threshold to justify a repair. As is common with high-dollar cars, water damage, accidents, and electrical bugs can all run the repair bill past what the insurance company is willing to shell out to put the car back on the road. However, THIS CAR RETAINS A CLEAR TITLE! The beauty of this car is that nobody in their right mind would cut up an '88 911 in today’s market. That means you would be one of extremely few to own such an example.
As we typically see with these sort of replicas, the conversion was done following some sort of insurance loss. Unfortunately for the owner at the time, the car was earmarked a total loss while still just a youngin, with only about 15,000 miles on the 3.2L flat-6 and G50 5-speed. We are not certain what created the total loss situation (i.e. flood damage, body damage, electrical damage).
Looking at the inside corners and under-body of the car, the structural integrity of the car does not appear to be compromised. Inside the trunk there is no evidence of a front end impact. By our inspection this car looks to be as safe as any. Odometer is functional and there are no signs that would indicate the mileage claim being inaccurate.
The body kit was professionally fitted and shows nicer than any 959 kit we have seen to date. We’ve had many, many kit cars before, including another 959. The panel fitment and finish on this car are very good. The car does not look awkward like so many kits do. The body gaps are consistent and the surface finish is smooth and free from excess filler. The bumpers have the correct vents and light locations. The rocker panels meet the lower edge of the door just as nicely as you would hope. The rear deck lid looks fantastic and meets the widened rear end just right. The aftermarket side view mirrors are spot on, as are the headlight bezels and rear light bar. We would prefer painted wheels but the chrome 5 spokes stand out nicely and fit the car well. There are pictures taken of the car everywhere it goes. The crowd-appeal of this car comes as no surprise, as there is only one “real” 959 Cabrio, built by a German company called Auto Becker, who cut the roof off of a 959 that had been rolled on the Autobahn. That car is currently for sale for well north of one million dollars.
The car is an absolute blast to drive; it may look a bit wild from the outside, but from behind the wheel it feels every bit as refined as a 3.2 Carrera should. Acceleration and braking are both linear and the car feels rock solid. There are no concerning noises or tendencies. Original G50 transmission shifts smooth and the car pulls hard through all the gears. Tires are close to new. The car has spent its life in dry states and it shows; the underbody looks great.
THE BAD:
- Power top needs servicing
- Radio is not functioning
- Passenger seat power adjust not working
- Tan leather on door panels shows a bit of discoloring
- Small tear in the driver corner of the boot covering the convertible top when folded down
Please take a look through the pictures, as the car is documented extensively. Feel free to reach out to Mike or Jake at 773-267-2684 with any questions or additional photo requests.
