It’s a one-owner car that spent almost 22 years in Texas, with the orginal owner from Frisco, Texas!
The Porsche 968 was made from 1992 to 1995. It was the final evolution of a line of water-cooled, front engine, rear wheel drive models, taking over the entry-level position in the company lineup. The 968 was Porsche’s last new front-engine vehicle until the introduction of the Cayenne SUV in 2003.
Porsche’s 944 model debuted for the 1982 model year, updated as “944S” in 1987 and as “944S2” in 1989. Shortly after the start of production of the S2 variant, Porsche engineers began working on another set of significant upgrades for the model, as executives planned a final “S3” variant of the 944. During the development phase, 80 percent of the 944’s mechanical components were either significantly modified or completely replaced by the engineers, leaving so little of the outgoing S2 behind that Porsche management chose to introduce the variant as a new model, calling it the 968. In addition to the numerous mechanical upgrades, the new model also received significantly evolved styling, inside and out, with a more modern, streamlined look and more standard luxury than on the 944. Production was moved from the Audi plant in Neckarsulm (where the 924 and 944 had been manufactured under contract to Porsche), to Porsche’s own factory in Zuffenhausen.
The car’s Guards Red paint is in excellent shape, as is the accompanying trim. The paint sports only minor imperfections visible upon close inspection, especially on the right rear fender. The car’s glass is crack-free and clear, belying its age. The vehicle’s lights are in great form as well. All body panels make the car appear showroom new. The engine bay is very tidy and the battery appears to be new. Car rolls on Nitto Motivo tires, size 245/40ZR17 all around and surrounding five-spoke wheels. Driver assist features include power steering, power brakes with anti-lock and air-conditioning.
The 968 was powered by an updated version of the 944’s straight-four engine, now displacing 3.0L with a 104 mm bore and an 88 mm stroke. Changes to the 968’s powertrain also included the addition of Porsche’s then-new VarioCam variable valve timing system, newly optimized induction and exhaust systems, a dual-mass flywheel and updated engine management electronics among other more minor revisions. The 968’s engine was the second-largest four-cylinder ever offered in a production car up to that time. A new six-speed manual transmission replaced the 944’s old five-speed and Porsche’s dual-mode Tiptronic automatic became an available option. Both the VarioCam timing system and Tiptronic transmission were very recent developments for Porsche. The Tiptronic transmission debuted only three years prior to the debut of the 968. The VarioCam timing system was first introduced on the 968 and would later become a feature of the Type 993 air-cooled six-cylinder engine.
Inside, the black leather/leatherette interior glistens and calls to you. The bucket seats, matching carpet, matching instrument panel with passenger airbag is in one piece, four-spoke steering wheel with airbag, door panels, mirrors, center console and shift lever are all in excellent condition. Rounding out the interior is a Kenwood AM/FM stereo with CD player.
Borrowed 944 S2 components include the Brembo-sourced four-piston brake calipers on all four wheels, aluminum semi-trailing arms and aluminum front A-arms, used in a Macpherson strut arrangement. The steel unibody structure was also very similar to that of the previous models. Porsche maintained that 80 percent of the car was new.
The 968 also featured numerous small equipment and detail upgrades from the 944, including a Fuba roof-mounted antenna, updated single lens tail lamps, “Cup” style 16″ alloy wheels, a wider selection of interior and exterior colors and a slightly updated “B” pillar and rear quarter window to accommodate adhesive installation to replace the older rubber gasket installation.
According to the CARFAX report, which is included, this car has no reported accidents or damages, no recalls, no indication of odometer rollback, no airbag deployments and no structural damage. Car was first titled on December 15, 1994 in Frisco, Texas. It was driven an estimated 3,098 miles per year.
The 968 carved out its own niche in the hearts of enthusiasts. This is likely due to the 968’s unique combination of speed and practicality, and low production numbers. Clean, low mileage examples have become extremely scarce and expensive by 2013.
Competition to this 968 in 1994 included Chevrolet’s Camaro IROC-Z Convertible, BMW’s M3 Cabriolet, Ford’s Mustang 5.0 GT Convertible and Mercury Capri’s RS Convertible.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 67,526 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, actual mileage Texas title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
