1981 Pontiac Firebird Formula Muscle Car 455 V8 Turbo 400

1981 Pontiac Formula Firebird Muscle Car powered by a 1970’s era 455 cu. in. Pontiac engine and backed by a Turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission. The car was purchased from the original owner/builder approximately a year ago, shortly after it was completed and has only been driven about 500 miles.

For a street cruiser the single stage black enamel with Trans Am fender scoops and a stock Formula hood look great. There appears to be no rust or bubbling coming through anywhere. The trunk and passenger floors appear to be solid and the only “bodywork” looks to be along the top of each door and the lower front fenders near the rocker panels. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being perfect, the paint is probably a 6. It shows well but has some imperfections (see photos). All exterior lights work including turn signals and brake lights.

It is believed the engine was rebuilt to the stock specifications of a 1970 GTO 455 HO which put out about 360 h.p. A stock Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor was used along with an HEI electronic ignition. A complete 2 ½” exhaust system with Turbo mufflers exits out the back with vintage Firebird/Trans Am exhaust tips.

The Turbo 400 was also rebuilt and has a shift kit. A firm shift is felt when going into each gear.

The 10-bolt rear differential is believed to be a 3.55:1 open unit.

The tires are new Hancook Ventus ST uni-directional radial tires measuring 255/50R/17 and mounted on 17” Retro Pontiac wheels.

Besides the driveline being rebuilt the interior had new stock appearing upholstery installed including a new headliner. The speedometer/odometer, radio, clock, temperature, oil pressure, wipers, and fuel gauge work, but the tachometer does not. Windows are clear with no cracks or fogging and roll up and down easily.

The suspension looks to be all new including the springs, shocks, bushings, power steering, power brakes (disc front & drums rear), and ball joints.

This car originally had A/C, but the compressor was not reinstalled, so it is not known if it would work should one be connected.

The owner is selling for personal reasons.
