Description:
1978 Pontiac Trans Am
1978 Pontiac Trans Am W72 WS6 RUNS and DRIVESI have owned the car since 1994 (28 years).I am selling for 2 reasons-I don't have the time and complete know how to restore the car like it should be.I am looking to purchase another car and need the garage space.
The car has essentially been stored since 1997 ( the last time it was tabbed). I never drove the car in the winter since my ownership and had put only maybe 10000 miles on it since its purchase. The car has been started every year and at least taken for a ride around the block. Many good memories with this car and i think that is why I kept it so long. It's the first car that scared the crap out of me. I still remember hitting the gas and it throwing me back hard in my seat and just holding the wheel tight for dear life. After, i thought to myself...."I didn't even put the gas to the floor!" At 100mph you just felt like you were floating cause she rode so smooth. Don't let what i just said make you think i just was hot rodding all the time. It was few and far between cause she was my baby and i took care of her.
This is a numbers matching car. The engine code stamped on the block is the X7 which identifies the W72 performance engine. Also, the Vin code stamped on the Engine block and Transmission match the Vin. (See the pics) I have the PHS papers that i sent away for a few years back that identifies the WS6 Performance handling option. This is the first year that the WS6 option was available on the Trans Am. It is a Van Nuys built car with the Fisher T Tops that were introduced as an option on late year build cars at Van Nuys. The car has a 160mph speedo which was in the car when i purchased. I've been told that it wasn't an option for 78 and must have been a later install taken from a 73. I can not attest to anything but the fact it was there when i bought it. That being said the mileage on the speedo might not be accurate if a swap did happen. On the title in the mileage it says Not Required. Like i stated above, it was there when i purchased it. I do know that i have put around 10000 on it since i purchased. The tires are P235/60/R15 which are a wider tire. I know back when i was driving it regularly i had a couple friends that had 78 trans ams too. We would swap cars for a quick ride and they would always say that my car was way different than theirs. In a good way though, lol. It handled alot better, more power, wider tires and they liked the speedo.
Since owning it I have replaced the starter (1997), Fuel Pump (2009), Fuel Filter (2009). I replaced the Brake master cylinder and brake lines from the master cylinder to both rear wheel cylinders. Also replaced the rear wheel cylinders and rear drum internals. (2017) Surprisingly, that is all. She has been very reliant over the years.
Now for some negatives,The windshield is spidered on passenger side,Dent above driver's door ( i believe an easy pull out just don't have a small enough dent puller),Under carriage is rusty ( before i purchased it i think someone had rubberized undercoated it but since is mostly gone.)Floor pans are shot.Rear driver side fender has bondo ( been there since i bought it)Prior to my purchase the owner told me it had been stolen and later recovered. The thief had punched the steering column to start it. I never had it fixed so the keys unlock the steering column and a nice flathead screwdriver starts the car, lol. Don't worry....I will throw the screwdriver in on the sale.A/C never workedTires need replacementTransmission leaks when sitting for a period of time. Doesn't leak when running though.
I do have some parts for the car that will go with it. I pulled the parts from a 79 firebird espirit many years ago. All the parts are Tan and would need to be vinyl painted black to match interior. All parts together value at least $1000. What comes with it is:Rear Marker lights (Brown)Steering Column ( came from a manual vehicle and no keys)Dash ( No Damage to the top just a small spot of damage near cluster area- tan)Rear Interior Side panels and sail panels ( i painted black but could be given a fresh coat)Both plastic seat backsBra the says Trans Am on frontAshtray
This car is a survivor and has always started. I would love for someone to bring her back to her former glory. It needs alot of love from the right person and i would love to see the finished product if she is restored. Hopefully, make some good memories for the next person.
The 1978 Trans Am is being sold AS-IS with no implied warranty. Buyer by placing bid acknowledges the preceding statement.I would not deem the car road worthy as the tires are outdated and the front brakes need some work. The vehicle does drive and stop but for safety reasons i would not recommend till sorted out. Vehicle would hence need to be towed to buyer's residence at the cost of the buyer.
THE RESERVE IS SET LOW. It is less than half the Buy It Now.
