The original spare wheel is in the trunk. The 389/303HP 4 bbl V8 engine is extremely strong and powerful and this particular car drives very well indeed. The upgraded 400 Turbo 3 speed automatic transmission has been installed and is considered one of the best automatic transmissions ever produced. With a three-speed automatic shift, the Turbo-Hydramatic series was developed to replace both the original Hydra-Matic models and the Buick Dynaflow. In its original incarnation as the Turbo-Hydramatic 400, it was first used in the 1964 model year in Cadillac's. The Buick version, which followed shortly thereafter, was known as the Super-Turbine 400. By 1973, THM units had replaced all of GM's other automatic transmissions including Chevrolet's Powerglide, Buick's Super Turbine 300, and Oldsmobile's Jetaway. Starting in the early 1980s, the Turbo-Hydramatic was gradually supplanted by four-speed automatics, some of which continued to use the 'Hydramatic' trade name.
The Pontiac Grand Prix was the top-of-the-line Pontiac luxury coupe and the first in a long line of 'Posh' Pontiacs that continued to the marques demise and boasted the most powerful standard engine of any Pontiac. Bucket seats were part of the standard package, as was a tachometer (with manual transmission) and vacuum gauge (with Hyra-Matic) and a center console also came as standard. The Grand Prix was a superbly styled car equally suited for the open road as it was around town.
This is a rare opportunity to own a great daily driving and never abused example of a coveted original southern California owner 'black plate' and rust free 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix coupe in very fine and mostly completely original condition, apart from one repaint in it's original factory color and the 400 turbo upgraded transmission, throughout! It has its full PHS documentation and its original owners manual with Protecto-plate which will be included with the car. Owned for over fifty six years by only very careful driving southern California owner, this is a beautiful example of one of the outstanding GM designs of the sixties, which has high repute amongst enthusiasts and collectors for both it's beautiful lines and smooth fast performance for a luxury coupe.
