Description:
1968 Pontiac Firebird 400
Like its corporate cousin the Camaro, the first-generation Firebird hit a high note with the public, where an ideal blend of styling, power, and comfort created one of the best muscle cars of all time. This slick green hardtop offers an aggressive yet gentlemanly look further sophisticated by its survivor finish, a sweet-running numbers matching 400 cubic inch V8, choice options, and no excuses on the street. The efficient proportions of the early F-bodies are whey they were so successful, but it's the detailing that gives them their street cred. The Firebird offers Pontiac's twin-nostril front end, adorned with '400' badges at each flank, and sharp fender creases that make the car look fast just sitting still. The Verdoro Green on this Firebird is shockingly this car's original paint, and we don't just mean that it's the correct color, we mean it's the actual factory finish survived on the original sheetmetal. What's even more shocking is the fact that it's in such great shape, showing a few signs of use, sure, but quite remarkable condition for a 52-year-old car. Even though it's not a trailer queen, this one looks fantastic sitting still, or hammering down the road. Gaps are factory, all the panels line up well, and it's the kind of car that people look at with a wary eye on the street because there's no telling what kind of firepower lives underneath. No extraneous add-ons were necessary, which means no wild graphics, no big snorkels on the hood, and only a pair of subtle '400' emblems to give it away. No, it's not exactly subtle, but they didn't really go out of their way to advertise big firepower, either, which is very cool. The black vinyl top is newer and in great shape, providing a soft and supple material that contrasts to the dark green hue on the rest of the car.
A green interior is a great choice with the monochromatic bodywork, and it appears that while the guts of this Firebird are all original too, it's still in great condition considering the decades of use. Bucket seats flank an optional center console, and the patterns are obviously correct for '68, without headrests, which weren't federally mandated until the next year. The door panels are original too, as is the dash and the carpet, and despite signs of use throughout (including on the seats), the cabin is still a very comfortable place to be. Pontiac tried to position the Firebird as an upscale alternative to the Camaro, so burled walnut appliques were used on the dash and console, and the gauges are simple and easy to read, including the big clock on the middle console just ahead of the shifter. The original AM radio is still in place and remarkably still works, and makes this car a real pleasure to drive. The trunk is correctly appointed and includes both a space saver and regular spare tire, along with the original jack kit.
A 400 cubic inch V8 was top-of-the-line in 1968 for the Firebird (albeit, with several horsepower options), bumping up against GM's self-imposed size limits. This one is the original numbers matching YT block, rated at 330HP and comes dressed just like it did at the dealership, with chrome valve covers and that large snorkeled air cleaner, all of which suggest there's some serious blasting powder within. Sure, it's not the prettiest presentation that it could be, and there are signs of maintenance throughout (including the factory A/C, which has been upgraded to R134a refrigerant), but most folks won't notice and they don't change the 'Bird's personality one bit, only improve it. Power steering and brakes are on the menu, as is a dual exhaust system that barks out a big sound you'll never grow tired of. A TH350 automatic transmission is a durable companion, and it rolls on correct Rallye II wheels with white-letter BFGoodrich T/A radials that have enough sidewall to really fill the fenders properly.
