1970 Pontiac Catalina Convertible
1970 Pontiac Catalina Convertible
"Starting Now this is the way it can be for big thinkers with small budgets" reads the advertising, and this was in reality true, as the Bonneville was the upscale Pontiac, and the Catalina, which borrowed from the Bonneville's look, was for the budget conscious.
In 1970, the Pontiac Catalina received a facelift. It had radiator grilles inspired by Grand Prix, hoods with wider and flatter center bulges, taillights set into bumpers, wrap over front fender tips, and hidden radio antennas. They had plain body sill molding and had "Catalina" lettering or "Ventura" lettering to show that it was equipped with the Ventura package, behind the front wheel openings. Catalinas also had untrimmed taillights, horizontal blade grilles, no fender skirts, and "Pontiac" centered on the edge of rear deck. Carpeting, upper level trim ventilation, Endura side, moldings, walnut-grained vinyl inserts, padded dashboards, and fiberglass black sidewall tires as standard equipment.
Exterior
Starting out life as Granada Gold, now completely covered with Red, our Catalina is a car not seen every day in our daily routine. It was one of the best-selling cars for the Pontiac division, in 1970, and one would think there would be more hanging around, but sadly so it is not true. Ours has a white canvas power top, which works beautifully. Chrome brite-work and badging are in good condition and crowned and wreath icon spoked wheel coverings are all around wrapped by thin whites.
Interior
Sandalwood vinyl showing some areas of wear, but overall good condition covers the front and rear seating, both benches. The dash is the standard GM style dash for 1970 and shows some cracking and crazing. Door panels are slightly showing some warp, and house the power window toggles. Carpet is darker brown, and has a few stains, but presents overall good. The surrounding dashed has a few areas of soiling, and no cracking.
Drivetrain
A 400ci V8 topped with a 2-barrel carburetor, puts out 265HP. Along with the TH400 3-peed automatic transmission, the car floats smoothly down the read.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted, but unremarkable as it pertains to structural problems. Rockers, floorpans, toe kicks, and suspension are all rust free. Underneath doors, we can see minimal corrosive rust coming through the respray, but again structurally strong and not invasive.
This overall straight but not perfect example of the everyday man's Pontiac, presents nicely, and runs smoothly. The perfect car if you want something not seen every day with its chromed nose, individual but dual bezeled headlights, large panels, and spacious mid-level interior in fair to good condition.
