1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am DKM Macho Coupe 6.6 Liter V8 4 Speed Manual Class
1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am DKM Macho
It's hard not to get excited about a very limited edition car that was built for bigger power and a meaner presence. So this 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am DKM Macho not only looks different from the other T/As out there, but it was also built to leave them all behind. This car has a rarity that's easy to spot. The fenders and rear panel boldly announces it's #90 in a very limited run (only 204 examples) of... Trans Ams modified by DKM through the family Pontiac dealership Mecham Motors in Arizona. So think of this as like the Yenko-level treatment for 2nd gen T/As. And this example really earns its Macho name as it was given a custom paint theme that looks like the offspring of the Bandit Trans Am and a Hurst Olds. The black and gold do a great job of highlighting all the best features, like the shaker hood, flared body kit, and full-length spoiler. Snowflake wheels are a must-have for a true performance T/A. The factory-correct tan interior is a great color combo against the exterior black. And you can show it off easily thanks to the T-tops. Plus, there have been some recent investments in places like new carpeting and seat covers to keep it looking good. They even invested in some nice upgrades like the retro-style AM/FM/cassette stereo that now offers a digital tuner. There are new components to offer air conditioning. But what you'll really like is how much this is made to be a driver's machine. You get Pontiac's three-spoke sports steering wheel now with the rare DKM center cap. Beyond that is the machine-turned dash with the full gauge panel. And keen eyes will also notice the roll bar â€" a rare DKM addition that also adds stiffness to the chassis. The engine bay looks terrific with the motor pulled, cleaned, and fresh components installed â€" right down to the hoses. This kind of fresh look is exactly what you're going to love, because it makes you proud to show off this 400 cubic-inch V8. DKM made sure the Macho car lived up to its name by opening up the shaker hood to let the motor inhale the fresh air into the four-barrel carburetor. These exhaled with authority as long tube headers add power while also contributing to the thunder of the dual exhaust (this has an updated set, but what's believed to be the original Hooker headers also come with the sale.) And you get to take full advantage of this added performance with the four-speed manual transmission. Plus, this is packaged as a tight-handling WS6 car that includes a limited slip rear end and sway bars front & rear. It goes great with the power steering and front disc brakes for a fine all-around performance machine. This car has rarity in a slick and powerful package, so that should check all your boxes for a cool and distinct classic. Don't let this Macho T/A slip away.
