Here's the scoop!
I purchased the car from the widow of the original owner. I have always enjoyed collecting cars with a history, and this car is no exception. The car was special order and delivered new in Washington DC in the Spring of 1969, by a man who helped uncover the Watergate Scandal, and was a high ranking politician, WWII Veteran, and Georgetown graduate. I really don't want to publicly go into those details, but would be happy to divulge that information to serious buyers.
The car was special ordered with some nice options, including factory AC, Power Disc Brakes, Power Steering, 3.23 Posi Rear End, Buckets, Console, Hideaway Headlights, TH-400 transmission, power top, Rally II Wheels, ect. The car was ordered in Liberty Blue with Blue Interior and a White Top.
The car was used daily for a short commute in the fair weather months from Georgetown to DC, accumulating some 15K miles on it by the time of his retirement in 1974. The car was used sparingly and largely preserved during that time. My understanding that only maintenance items were replaced during 1974 to his passing in 1991.
The car was kept by his wife and she had it "spruced up" in the mid 90's. What I mean by that is the car was stripped and painted, and what a excellent job they did. The car is still arrow straight and the paint shows INCREDIBLY well for being over 20 years old. The interior is completely original and looks like a well kept 50K mile car. From carpet to sun visors, it is completely original and everything looks candidly new! If I had to play devils advocate, I'd complain about the console lid, it has a small amount of degradation, and a bit of paint chipping on the ash tray fascia (see photo) The wiring harnesses are virgin and uncut, the car was never molested and the original AM/FM radio still works!
The son of the original owner became the steward of this car in the early 2000's. He had the mechanicals progressively attended to and actually used the car. A very attention detailed individual, he had valve seals done on the car and along with pretty much every gasket in the drivetrain replaced, the car is extremely well sorted out, and runs and drives great! He replaced the convertible top with a high quality replacement, which powers up and down great. The car originally came with a white top, but it was replaced with a black one. This is the only deviation from "as delivered" that this car has, is the convertible top color.
The car is exceptionally solid, and was lovingly maintained. This car is as close to a completely reasonable Survivor as I have come across. Everything works, and the fit and finish is a true testament to the low mileage of this car. Imagine, a 1969 GTO that does not get wet inside when you wash it! She always fires right up, doesn't smoke, runs like a Swiss clock, until you mash the throttle and it kicks down and sets you back in your seat, and takes you for a ride!
During my tenure, I have attempted to service the A/C compressor, which had seized on a 95 degree summer day. I decided to remove the compressor and have the original rebuilt to preserve the original "OK" stamp on it. I intended to send it out, but it got as far as a box in the trunk, where it remains today.
As my collection grew, my family grew...so time to work on my cars is extremely limited. My reason for selling is I've sold my building and am now having my collection occupying my garage, neighbors garages, our cabin, storage units etc. So, I've decided that I should pass on my cars to serious buyers, who want QUALITY cars. If you want a "body shop special" or "pig in lipstick" that is advertised with some woman posing on it, this car is not it.
You get what you pay for! This car needs nothing to be enjoyed as a very original car, but has been kept up to a point that it is as reliable as my new car. The A/C compressor will need to be rebuilt or replaced with another A6 Compressor ($200) and EVERYTHING will work.
I've enjoyed this car, and the fact that every part is original, i.e. engine, trans, rear end, carb, distributor, alternator, (starter I never checked) and that care was taken to service these original parts in lieu of replacement parts used.
They are only original once! The car has a "intense" history, incredibly well preserved, and runs and drives like new!
I really have no interest in any trades. I am not a dealer, cannot offer any financing...Inspections welcome and encouraged. I wrote the book on these cars, (literally) and invite any inspector to challenge it!
The car is for sale locally as well as eBay. In the event of a sale outside of eBay, this auction can and will be canceled. I sold my IDENTICAL 69 last week, within 2 days of listing it. The procrastinators won't be the buyer on this unit. This car is nicer, has a more extensive and prestigious history, and is a better survivor.
Payment via Cash in Person, wire transfer, or Cashiers Check (All Cashiers Checks need to clear my bank for 5 business days before car or title is released)
If you need assistance with shipping, I can help. I have a brokerage account with Central Dispatch and can offer shipping "at cost".
You can call me at any reasonable time to talk about the car at 630 273 7595...if I'm busy...leave a message...I'll call ya back!
