1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible - the most beautiful car on earth 455 3sp std
1968 Pontiac Firebird 326
I will certainly weep when this car drives away. I purchased it at age 19 (my dream car). I am a female (so the car was never "beat" on). It has been with me for 30 years (in dry New Mexico). I believe this to be the most beautiful car ever made.
It has always been garaged/covered. I have never driven it more than 250 miles per year (classic insurance rules). I have not driven it for 2 years and have decided that it is time it moves on, so that someone else can love it. Cars hate to sit still. Plus, I have to pay for kid in school.
Starts right up and runs great! Sounds awesome. Super powerful car.
VIN: 223678U602773
This car was made in 1967, issued in 1968
The VIN states that it is a 1968
Only 16,960 of the '68 convertibles were produced
Only 15,528 of the '67 convertibles were produced
A rare 2-door convertible - a mid year car, it has a few OEM (original equipment manufacturer)anomalies.
This car originally was the 326 package "Firebird 326" (a feature specific to '67)
This car does not have the front quarter glass (a feature specific to '68)
This car does not have the side marker lamps (a feature specific to '68) Rather it hasthe signal lamp under the bumper, inside the front valance opening (a feature specific to '67)
Though it does have the side marker lamps in the rear, the light up Pontiac emblems on the rear quarter panels (a feature specific to '68)
It has drum brakes all around, and manual steering
Before I purchased it 30 years ago, it was converted to a 455 Pontiac (I was told. Please see the motor numbers in the images to confirm).
Motor # is: 600510 YX
OEM 3 speed standard / on the floor / Hurst T shifter
It was originally Mayfair Maize (pale yellow). When I purchased it, it had been painted red. I painted it pearl white 25 years ago.
When I purchased it, I was told that the odometer reading was inaccurate.
There is one dent in rear passenger quarter panel. Regrettably, I did that myself, backing in to a low wall.
It has some surface rust, very little on the rear quarter panels, see photos.
The convertible top is manual. The top frame is slightly bent, hence it descends in to the boot at an angle. As such, it has damaged the passenger side boot upholstery. See photo. You can keep this from happening by pulling the top toward you when it descends.
It needs a heater core.
There is currently a "kill switch" attached to the heater switch on the dashboard. An addition for theft prevention. Hence, that will need to be disconnected it you are going to make the heater functional.
The top has a few small holes in it, less than an inch square. It has become brittle. It still looks good and works fine, but if I were to keep it, I would replace the top.
The clutch is stiff. I have gotten good at making smooth transitions, but with the giant motor and the 3-speed, it can be a little jerky if you aren't good at it.
The doors are long and heavy and sag a little, common to this model. They shut easily.
Cool cowhide inserts in the interior (they shed a little). The doors are panels are OEM. The whole interior is in excellent shape. Excluding the top of the back seat which has cracked over the years. See photos. The carpet and dash are perfect.
The paint is chipped on the passenger door front edge hinge area. They then used "touch up paint" on it. See photo close up with "Firebird" emblem.
Years ago, I had the car towed, and they used straps, which damaged the valance on the front end. When they "repaired" it, they did not replace the running lights with the correct ones. It almost looks as though they made them by hand.
The 8-track was gone when I got the car. It has a cassette player in it now. With aftermarket speaks mounted below the dash. See photos.
The tires have lots of tread, but have cracked due to storage.
