1978 Friebird trans am
1978 Pontiac Trans Am Tan
For sale 1978 Pontiac Trans Am. I bought this car earlier in the summer with the intentions of restoring it. I have got a lot of the mechanicals done to make it road worthy, and I drive it often to work, 75 miles round trip! and cruising around town. It runs great, shifts very well. gas mileage is ok as it has a 256 axial ratio, but that takes away from the take off power.
I have put on new rear leaf springs with install kit, shocks on all 4 corners, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, rear brakes, with new drums, and hardware, front brakes, changed oil and trans fluid, new rear tail shaft seal and bushing, new oil sending unit. The car drives very well for being 40 years old! Steers to the left just slightly, and has a few squeak's and rattles.
The car looks great form 20 feet, but it doeshave rust in the drives fenders and door, and the passenger fenders and rocker, and the bottom of the rear tail panel. I am no body expert, but looks like most of the rust can be taken care of with patch panels. The paint is old, decals are weathered and will need redone! The car has at some time beenrust proofed not sure what was used, Zerbart? So the floor panes, trunk are in good shape, it did have a lot of surface rust on the rear frame area, with some scaling, but still very solid, I applied a rust converter to the area. The tank was taken down drained cleaned and painted, the build sheet was still there but in ruff shape see pictures!
The car is a factory A/C, but the compressor and receiver dryer are missing. The cruise control is not working, the dome light does not come on, the heater core was leaking, and the previous owner had looped the heater hose. The interior is not bad for 40 years old some cigarette burns, the typical crack in the dash, some of the seams in the front seats are pulling, the drives seat has a place that some of the vinyl has pulled of the fabric, the passenger sidefloor mat is missing.
I put new valve cover gaskets on the engine. The engine was very clean inside! see pictures. The odometer show almost 43,000 miles on it, but the title shows exempt. The title does show it has been corrected at some time, so that may be why they exempted the mileage?but I do not believe it has 143000 on it. Itdoes not smoke, leak, or knock. The front suspension looks to be all stock. The exhaust is a welded dual Flowmaster in good shape although the welds could look better! Power windows work fine but go up slow if you try to run them up together.
I am selling this car because I have lots of projects going on, and I am having a newseptic system put in in the next couple of weeks! I love the car it is a blast to drive and gets lots of attention. Ebay would only let me put 24 pictures on the add, but I have lots of before and after pictures of the under side and the rest of the car!Just send me your contact info and I send you any you want!
