1979 Pontiac Trans Am W72
T-TopsA/C - working4 speed manual transmission400ci Pontiac engine with stock 800CFM carb.
45000 miles.
Purchased ~5 years ago.
The car is a survivor. The really neat photos are from a photo shoot a couple years ago. The car hasn't changed since then. The garage photo shows the car in the garage as it sits.
Bird on hood looks original. Is in very good shape but has a bit of patina in it, little spider webs in the clear part of the decal.
Paint is in really great shape for the year, but shows its age in a couple spots. The roof around the T-tops is faded a bit, but looks good, as is the trunk lid. The rest of the paint is in really great shape but does have chips here and there. The car is a 40 year old survivor. The paint is mostly, if all, original. I purchased it with the original corners of the spoiler in a box, so those were obviously replaced at some point, although in good shape too. Most body and paint people that view the car think its 95% or more original.
The body, under body, and trunk are in incredible shape. Under the trunk carpet is perfectly black, and not even surface rust. Same for subframes, and suspension components.
The engine looks to never have been pulled, and frankly, if I keep the car any longer, that would be the only thing that would improve it and keep it original. Simply to either pull the engine, or remove all the accessories and detail the engine compartment. One of the prior owners added some braided line covers and a chrome alternator. I'm not a fan of that stuff, but never got around to removing it.
The interior is really great shape. The only issues are the chrome on the door card piping is peeling a bit. The radio is not original, but looks to be upgraded in the early 80s with the alpine deck that is installed now.
When I purchased it the transmission had a bad center bearing. The transmission was pulled, and rebuilt at Cycle-Motive in Utica, NY. Full tear down kit, needle bearings, syncros, everything. The transmission shifts perfectly. Other than that I've simply changed the oil and driven it about 2500 miles.
The clutch was original at the time, and still had factory markings on it. The clutch is fine, so it stayed, since it was original.
There are headers, and a stainless exhaust on it. I do not have original exhaust, but I do have original manifolds.
There is a chrome alternator, but I have original alternator. Same for the front bracing. It was replaced with thicker bracing but I have the originals.
The original T-Top bags are in the trunk, in perfect condition, in the original plastic cover. Same goes for the spare tire.
The person I bought the car from had all the original parts that came off of it, except the shifter.
There aren't really any issues with it. The header gaskets are leaking a bit, so at some point the headers will have to be pulled to get them sealed up properly. Every once in a while the speedo cable chirps.
The rear tyres are oversized. That is the way I bought it, and never got around to changing them.
The car is just awesome. My friends think I'm crazy for selling it, but I only drove it a couple hundred miles in the past two years. In the winter it is in dry storage under a fitted 600 dollar cover, and in the summer it sits in my dry garage, under the same breathable fitted cover.
Basically I bought it from a guy who had it for a couple years, who bought it from a neighbor who passed away, and had it for a really long time.
I have a binder with the original receipt, manual, and build sheet. Other random documentations that the prior owner collected as well.
I would suggest looking at it if you are serious. If you are not local, I'll back it out and grab more pics if you want them.
