1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible 4 speed
This is a stunning, 1967 Pontiac GTO 4 speed Convertible, beautifully restored to as new condition, with minor changes done to enhance drivability and increase safety. I have owned this convertible for 11 years and it has undergone a three year, no expense spared restoration. It is an outstanding example of automotive art that is fantastic to drive and exceeds its reputation for performance and speed. It is very, very fast! Please look closely at the attached photos. The attention to detail and painstaking restoration will speak for itself. The attached photos are only a few of the hundreds that I have taken of the restoration process. I will gladly provide any additional photos or information about the GTO. There are no secrets in this restoration or hidden flaws as seen in many vehicles that are called "restoredâ€. The more you look at the details of this GTO the better it will become! There is not a part or piece on this GTO that was not rebuilt, replaced or restored!
The GTO is a documented GTO convertible, one of 9,517 made in 1967 and one of the 4,313 4 speed GTOs made in that year.Enclosed is factory documentation from the Pontiac Historical Society confirming it is a real GTO convertible. The build sheet confirms the VIN number, the color, options and other critical information.Significantly, the Engine Unit Number is listed on this document and this number matches the number stamped on the right side of the engine block, proving that the GTO still retains its original engine.(Note:the serial number of the vehicle was not stamped on the engine and transmission until government required in 1968).The Muncie 4 speed wide ratio transmission is also original to the car, with a build date of May 4, 1967. Please refer to the attached Build Sheet. The block has a casting number of 9786133, correct for 1967 and a D197 block cast date of April 19, 1967.This provided further verification of the engine' authenticity.
The Pontiac Historical Society also provided documentation referred to as the Wholesale Car Order. It lists options on this GTO as having: an AM Pushbutton Radio; Center Seat Belts; F:70x14Red Wide Oval Tires, Safe T-Track Rear Axle with 3.55 ratio; 4 speed Fully Synchronized Muncie Transmission. Please refer to the attached Wholesale Car Order.
The original Data Plate is attached to the firewall and decodes as being built the 4th week of May, 1967, assembled in the Baltimore Plant, Black Interior Trim, Regimental Red Exterior Color with a Black Convertible Top.Please refer to the attached Data Plate Decoding.
The GTO'soriginal VIN plate is secured via rivets on the driver's side door frame. The VIN 242677B131321 decodes as a 1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible, built at the Baltimore Assembly Plant.
The Pontiac Historical Society provided an exact reproduction of the Original Window Sticker. It indicates the GTO was delivered to Harry Brown Pontiac, Inc, New Hyde Park, NY, and retailed for a total price of $3,554.66.See attached Window Sticker.
While all GTO's were noted for their performance, special attention was given to the original 400 cubic inch engine, factory rated at 335 horsepower.I had a noted engine builder who specializes in Pontiac engines rebuild the engine. The goal was to be a stock looking engine, but with internals upgraded for performance. To that end, only high quality parts were used. Some of these included light weight forged pistons, Moly rings, ARP bolts, Clevite bearings, Melling oil pump, high performance Comp Cam and push rods. The block was bore honed and blocked, the rotating assembly was blueprinted, balanced and then spin balanced. The original cylinder heads (cast 670) were extensively ported and hardened valve seats installed.Hydraulic rolling rockerarms were installed. The original intake manifold (E017-Date code May 1, 1967) was also ported. It should be noted that the carburetor is a high performance model, it is not correct for a 1967 GTO.The part number of the installed carb is for a 1968 Buick GS or Olds 442.
The other components of the drive train were also refurbished and restored. The 4 speed transmission was rebuilt, the original drive shaft was spin balanced and new U joints installed. The original 3:55 rear was disassembled, sandblasted, epoxy primed and painted black. All seals, gaskets and bearings were replaced.
This attention to detail was given to each part of this GTO.It was totally disassembled. The frame was sandblasted, sprayed in black PPG epoxy paint and painted again in black paint. The body was placed on a rotisserie frame at my residence where it was sandblasted, sealed and painted in multiple coats of base coat/clear coat.I then turned the GTO over to a reputable body shop. There new lower quarter panels, a trunk floor and quarter panel extensions were installed.A reproduction driver's side floor pan was also installed. After extensive blocking and sanding, the GTO was painted in multiple coats of PPG basecoat/clearcoat paint. It was then sanded and buffed multiple times, resulting in a brilliant mirror finish.
I sandblasted all the suspension parts and painted them with PPG epoxy paint. All bushings, wear parts, ball joints, springs, were replaced with Moog quality parts or had polyurethane bushings replace the original rubber parts. All brake parts were replaced, including adding stainless steel brake and fuel lines, rubber hoses, master cylinder and brake booster. The GTO originally came with four wheel manual drum brakes. In interest of safety, the front brakes were converted to power disc brakes, with all brake parts matching original type parts.
Other upgrades were installed on the GTO. It came from the factory equipped with manual steering, but it was converted to power steering, again using original type equipment. It had the standard GTO dash when built. This dash package did not include a tachometer and only warning lights for temperature and oil pressure. The dash was upgraded to the optional woodgrain Rally dash, which now include a full set of gauges as well as a tachometer.
The original wheels and tires were 14 inch with Rally II wheels. These were upgraded to 15 inch tires, with Rally I wheels.
The largest upgrade on the GTO was the conversion of the Black convertible top and interior to a white top and a parchment (off white) interior.I must admit I spent quite a bit of time debating this conversion. However, upon viewing the stunning results, I know it was the right decision. (Especially in Texas!).The white top and parchment interior make this GTO one of the best!
