Fans of the Red Dart models will be pleased to see this 1967 Pontiac GTO available at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. Built during the second week of June 1967 at GM’s Kansas City, Missouri assembly plant, this car is ready for some serious summer cruising. It left the factory with the following options – tinted glass, center console, remote driver’s side mirror and deluxe custom front seat belts. It comes complete with PHS documentation showing the car is a real GTO Convertible.
The red paint is in very good overall condition, as are the car’s trim bits. The glass panels are clear and crack-free and the all of the vehicle’s lights are present and intact. This GTO ride on 205/75R15 radials surrounding factory five-spoke alloy wheels with red dart center caps. The ivory power-folding top looks fantastic, nicely complements the red paint and is in great shape. All of its body panels are solid and straight, including the hood with its power bulge, the bumpers look great, the engine bay is very tidy and the battery appears new.
Under that wide, red hood with its air intake bulge is a 400 CID big-block V-8 (engine code 9786133), mated to a Turbo Hydramatic M40 three-speed automatic transmission with 3.55 gearing. Driver assist options include power steering and power brakes.
Inside, the black Strato front bucket seats look great. The matching carpet is in good order, as is the matching black instrument panel, although it does show some minor blemishes upon close inspection. Also, there are ancillary gauges mounted below the dash. The factory three-spoke steering wheel is present and the inner door panels are in good order. The center console with its faux woodgrain accents is in very good order. The mirror glass and shifter are in good order. Rounding out the interior are the front passenger grab bar and the factory AM radio.
The first generation GTO was a muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s era. Although there were earlier muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models.
The GTO became its own model from 1966 to 1971 (VIN 242...) and underwent a few styling changes in 1967. The louver-covered taillights were replaced with eight taillights, four on each side. Rally II wheels with colored lug nuts were also available in 1967. The GTO emblems located on the rear part of the fenders were moved to the chrome rocker panels. Also the grill was changed from a purely split grill to one that shared some chrome.
The GTO also saw several mechanical changes in 1967. The Tri-Power carburetion system was replaced with a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor. The 389 engine received a larger cylinder bore for a total displacement of 400 CID and came in three models: economy, standard and high output.
The 1967 model year required new safety equipment – an energy-absorbing steering column accompanied an energy-absorbing steering wheel, padded instrument panel, non-protruding control knobs and four-way emergency flashers. A shoulder belt option was also featured, and the brake master cylinder was now a dual reservoir unit with a backup hydraulic circuit.
The two-speed automatic transmission was also replaced with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic TH-400. The TH-400 was equipped with a Hurst Performance dual-gate shifter, called a "his/hers" shifter – it permitted either automatic shifting in "drive" or manual selection through the gears. Front disc brakes were also an option in 1967.
Documentation includes PHS Documentation, various service and parts invoices, a poster of photos and miscellaneous paperwork.
Competition to this Pontiac in 1967 included Buick’s Skylark GS400 Convertible, Chevrolet’s Chevelle SS-396 Convertible, Ford’s Fairlane GTA 390 Convertible and Mercury’s Monterey Convertible,
