Description:
1972 Plymouth Duster
This is my 1972 Plymouth Duster 340 which my Dad and I purchased in 2014 from Clifton Park, NY. This Duster had not been registered since 1980, Originally a Lemon Twist 340 with Vinyl Top and a 727 Torquflite with Power Steering (Now Manual Steering). It is a real H Code Car! Drum Brakes all the way around - which stop EXCELLANT - I TRUST THIS CAR TO TAKE ME ANY WHERE!I Live in southern NH and Ive driven this car up as far as Maine and as far south as Rhode Island. WITH NO ISSUES.
Unfortunately, the 340 was not with the car when we purchased it.It did have a 360 Magnum (95 Block), Magnum Heads, EdelbrockPerformer Intake and EdelbrockCarb. It has a Crane Cam, Flat Tappet, Solid Lifter and Dual Valve Springs - I do have the Cam Card - The Cam was in it when I bought the car.
My Dad and I have worked on every inch of the car, making it what it is today. IT HAS BEEN AN ABSOLUTE LABOR OF LOVE - UNTIL RECENTLY I HAVE NOT HAD ANY DESIRE TO SELL IT.
The car has been to the body shop where it was pulled apart and repainted. The Cowl was repaired, the rockers remade, LH Door replaced, RH Quarter replaced and Tail Panel replaced - all with AMD Parts. Floors are solid. Subframe connectors were also welded in.
The car visually was brought back to as much of a stock look as possibly. The Drive Train is not matching numbers! The Engine appears to look just like the correct 340 sporting the correct Intake Manifold (date coded 72), A Thermoquad (Rebuilt 2 years ago - Also correct for 72), Correct Factory Exhaust Manifolds (Dated 72 and with proper Heat Shield/ Riser). The car was not equipped with a Coolant Overflow - it now has an aftermarket Bottle installed - (see picture).
With everything else being mechanically sound and running very well, I wanted something which would be more exciting to drive as well as be a better cruiser. We decided our most recent upgrade needed to be the Tremec TKO 5 Speed. This was installed to a "T" per the instruction manual. Using all the componentsincluded from Silver Sport Transmission - You can also view my testimonyand additional pictures at the link provided.
Because the car was originally a Column Shift Car - I replaced the Column with one which had been rebuilt and was correct for a Floor Shift Car. I Also installed the correct Reverse Indicator Light which illuminates amber when in Reverse.
The end of last year I purchased a 3:90 Differential from Doctor Diff. The 3:90 represents zero issues cruising on the highway with the 5 Speed. The car will cruise just over 70 under 3k RPM. I test drove a WRX back in 2017 and was severelylet down - this car's power put that particular WRX to shame.
I could say that virtually everything has been repaired, rebuild or replaced at one time or another and I have a HUGE stack of receipts that will go with car.The essentials;ALL The Gages WorkHeater get HOT - very nice in cold weather.Defroster Vents are in excellent Condition.Under-dash wiring is in good condition.Good Heater Control Cables - Heater Controls GLIDE, very smooth to operate.I'm not sure when the Engine was gone through - it was by the previous owner before I got it, But it runs well.
(All I've done to it is new Intake and Exhaust Gaskets and a new Belt)The Intake and Exhaust Manifolds were Gasket-Matched before installation.I replaced the Engine Harness about 2 years ago due to brittleness of some of the originalwires.Under Dash AccessoryPorts for convenience.Recent Tune Up; Plugs Cap, Rotor, Condenser, Wires & Plugs - Wires are 8mm Thick Silicone, Used the orange boots for a factory appearance.New Tremec TKO 600 5spd Manual Transmission with HD ClutchNew 3:90 DifferentialNew Drive ShaftBrakes are excellentBreak Lines were done right before I bought got the carALL fluids are less than a year old.All Wheel Bearings and Races are new.Axle Seals are new and so are those papery gaskets that butt up to the Drum Backing PlateComplete Exhaust, the Hangers, Flowmasters and Tips are about a year old.New Leaf Springs from ESPO Springs.E-Brake works greatNewer Front End Parts and Ball Joints (Approx 2 Years Old) CAR RIDES TIGHT, JUST JUST LIKE IT SHOULD - STEERING IS PERFECT WITH NO SLOPThe Steering Coupler and Manual Steering Box where install about 2 years ago.Interior was said to be original except the Front Seat which was reupholstered before I got the car.Speedo Cable is good - Speedometer doesnt hop -its nice and steady. The Radio is ORIGINAL Chrysler Solid State AM Only - The Dash is not hacked - I did send it out for an AM/FM Conversion - it works great and still looks factory. There are two Harmon Speakers in the Rear Deck - they have a generic type Square Grills over them because the Grills that came with most of the speakers I was looking at looked too futuristic and would look out of place.I put in the optional CourtesyLight Package (minus the Key Light), Car has Map Light, Ash Tray Light, Glove Box Light and Trunk Light.
NOTE: KYB Shocks are pictured in the front - I recently put Bilstein'son - The Rear has had Air Shocks on since I bought the car. The hold air perfectly.
PLEASE BE AWARE - THE CAR DOES HAVE AN ENGINE OIL DRIP - I BELEIVE FROM THE PAN, I have not had time this year to fix it - it is minor and does NOT requirefrequent top offs.
I'm considering selling the car because my daily drive work tuck needs a bit of work and my fiancé's 66Charger needs to be finished. I have had the car since I was 18 and I loved it - still do. I want to see it go to someone who will appreciate it. Any questions feel free to ask me! I'll respond asap.
I have not beat on the car but I've had my fun with it. It is fast, but you could daily this car too - that's how reliable this thing is.I have never taken this car to the track.Throughout playing around though I've found that Cadillac CTS2.0t which google says has 268hp didn't stand a chance outrunning me.A Subaru WRX off the lot didn't compare when it came toacceleration, and in comparison was garbage over 60.And as factory as the car looks, it held very well, nearly neck and neck against an extremelyintimidating looking Foxbody Mustang, in the only stop light race the car has seen.
