1940 Plymouth Pickup
1940 Plymouth Pickup
The Plymouth PT105 Pickup was developed in 1936 as an alternative to the trucks being built by Chrysler purely because every Plymouth dealer in the United States and Canada paired each model from Plymouth with another product from Chrysler. In order to save time and developments costs, Plymouth built their new truck on a chassis from Dodge and labelled it the "PT" which stood for "Plymouth Truck". For the first year they developed four models on the platform, including the Express (the pickup), a Cab-and-Chassis, a Commercial Sedan, and a Wood Body Station Wagon although that last one only lasted one year.
For consignment a somewhat rare example of the PT105 (meaning Plymouth Truck which was built on a car chassis) in which a mere 6,879 examples were built for that year. This truck in primer form for the exterior steel, shows no rust on the body panels, and has all the correct chrome. Also, a high stake body bed surround has been added, presumably to haul a head of cattle, due to the sliding side door seen where a ramp could be attached. This truck could be an ambitious restoration project upon which will yield a nice rare example of the pickup truck...Plymouth style.
Exterior
With the front of the truck looking very similar to the Plymouth cars of the day it is well preserved with all the correct chrome trimmings, a rounded V grille with horizontal wings stretching towards the big round fenders. On top of the grille are a trio of chromed strips that stretch from a center line vertical strip that makes its way from the bottom of the grille through the hood ornament and fades back to the windshield. A nicely preserved bumper runs across the front and also frames the rounded front fenders. On top of each of these fenders is a seal beam headlight with a turn signal topper. The driver's fender has a dent near the headlight. Otherwise these streak past the hood, and dive downward towards a running board. This running board allows easy access to the cab, and also affords more room behind the door to step up and check on your cargo. Another rounded rear fender then moves upward from the rear portion of the board and frames the rear wheel as well as butts up against the steel bed. A wood "cage" is atop the sides of the bed. The bed is simple plywood with a metal strip that is becoming detached from the floor. On back is a single taillight, and another nicely preserved bumper running across the back. On all 4 corners are dog dish style chromed wheel covers with red centers. A spare with the same cap in black hangs from the driver's side of the stake portion of the bed.
Interior
Barn find condition with water streaks on the original metal dash, floor board battery cover missing and a covered bench which will need a full restoration. Gauges and steering wheel are original, as are fiberboard door insert panels. Some surface rust is seen on most interior metal surfaces.
Drivetrain
A 201.3ci L Head Inline 6 cylinder in unrestored condition sits in the engine bay. It has a 1-barrel carburetor atop and a 3-speed manual transmission on back. This engine will not currently crank much less run.
Undercarriage
A fine coating of surface rust is seen on all the undercarriage surfaces that have not been oiled either from the engine, or wheel grease. Things remain structurally sound with no rust through, and it appears a recent exhaust system has been installed. Body hangers have surface rust but are still holding strong on the running boards. Leaf spring suspension provides the ride, and drum brakes are on all 4 corners.
