1970 PRO STOCK DUSTER
This is known as a body in white. Chrysler Corporation sponsored various successful drag racing teams to promote their cars. When a normal Duster came off the assembly line, it was a finished car and had designated serial or VIN numbers. When the factory donated the cars for racing they took the cars off the assembly line early, before the cars were finished and these had no VIN numbers. Thus, it is called a "body in white". I have owned this car for 10 years and strangely, I do not have an interest in drag racing. The previous recluse owner, had this in his large collection for 30 years. The Duster ended its racing in about 1979. It started racing in 1970 with the 3 point roll bar. As NHRA rules changed, the 3 point roll bar was added on to comply. In the early years (1971-73) the drag teams would upgrade tail lights, grill etc, to look like the latest new body features. This Duster received those changes. The gold anodized sheet metal was some of what was added later.
Up until its retirement in 1979, it was always raced with a 426 Hemi and a 4 speed. Both were removed in 1980 before the previous owner purchased it. It retains the original date coded late 1969 Dana shortened rear end. Much of the car retains its early build including the October 1969 date coded 6 cylinder radiator. It has the original front drum brakes, that were common in 1970 due to being lighter than disc brakes. (Early books on Sox & Martin's 1970 Duster, for example, clearly show drum brakes).
This car is from the dawn of Pro Stock. Install a Hemi and 4 speed and this will reflect the early history of Drag Racing. Interesting note, "BIG DADDY" did do some art work on the trunk.
