1972 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe

Here is your opportunity to own a unique piece of Mopar history. This stunning example of the muscle car era is without a doubt, one of the nicest C-Body restorations out there. This car has been confused on several occasions as being a low mileage survivor because of the amazing attention to detail that went into the restoration. Years of research, along with personally having ordered one of these new, and with my knowledge of selling cars of the 1970's have made this car "Best of Class" and "Best of Show" at several shows and Mopar only events.
In 1969 Chrysler Corporation debuted the new "Fuselage" body. The new shape and styling ques made the C-Body more recognizable from its younger siblings. The wider stance and aggressive front end were very desirable among consumers weary of the straight-lined early sixties cars. Models like the Imperial, New Yorker, Monaco, Polara and Fury all became popular sellers for Chrysler. The 1972 Plymouth Fury Got a face-lift from its prior model year. Undoubtedly the most iconic feature was the sinister hidden headlights and twin loop grille that made it one of the most popular of all the years. The two-door version was especially rare as most C-Body cars were sedans. The luxury options that came with the Gran Coupe, along with the must haves like air conditioning made this a very desirable candidate for restoration. This car started life Sunfire Yellow with a vinyl top and cloth interior. Several colors were considered before choosing this stunning red and black combination.
The body was media blasted to bare metal and was finished with a base coat clear coat combination. The minor rust around the rear wheel wheels was cut out and metal welded back in place. The body is rock solid with no rust bubbles or blemishes in the paint except for a few touched-up chips on the front edge of the hood. The body work and paint on this car are exceptional. There are no sanding marks or blemishes that in anyway take away from its show finish. The front fenders andhood were all painted together off the car to ensure a flawless paint job and it shows. The underside of the car was undercoated when new. It was re-coated after the underside components of the car were removed from the body. This included thedrive-train as well as the entire sub-frame. Each underside component was disassembled, media blasted and painted with the correct factory coating, including each individual rear-leaf spring. Cast parts were coated with matte clear to insure they would look factory new for decades. The rear end was treated to new paint and seals. Special attention was given to reproduce the correct factory inspection markings. This includes the drive-train, suspension andradiator supportto name a few. The correct grain vinyl top was replaced by a30 year plus veteran of the trade. All the glass is factory original, and in excellent condition, with the exception of the windshield, which is new. All chrome and aluminum were taken off the car polished and replaced with the correct fasteners. The front and rear bumpers were sent away andre-chromed. The hide away headlights work properly, and the grille was meticulously restored. The body fasteners and bolts were all media blasted and re-coated with the correct black phosphorus coating which make the car indistinguishable from one off the factory line.
The interior was completely removed. The high back bench seat was reupholstered with the factory correct pattern of cloth and vinyl, including the fold down armrest. The power seat works perfectly and is amazingly comfortable on long trips. The headliner was replaced and professionally reinstalled to guarantee tightness. The loop carpet was replaced as well, along with the period correct factory rubber floor mats. The dash was removed and shipped to Just Dashes for restoration and new vinyl covering. Their special process includes vacuum sealing the new correct grain covering to your factory shell. It looks amazing. The door panels were in great original condition. They were cleaned refurbished and reinstalled. This past year, thespeedometer was replacedwith a new NOS speedometer, so it truly feels like a new car off the showroom floor.
The original factory 360 engine was removed and replaced with the much more desirable and infamous 440 Big Block. The engine was built with HP components including the 906Magnum heads, and other goodies that made the 440 Super Commando and 440 Magnum engines feared among the Ford and GM boys. It sports a new Edelbrock Performer carburetor. It is built to get up and go but has the factory 2:73 rear end gears to get very reasonable gas mileage on trips. The engine accessories, hoses, belts and clamps were all replaced or restored. All components were re-installed with period correct fasteners and bolts. The engine has intense torque and power off the line. The legendary 727 Torqeflite shifts smooth and precise. The tuned exhaust sounds throaty without being obnoxious. The frontfender wells were powder coated to insure a long lasting gloss coating.
Inspection of this car and engine bay were given an enthusiastic thumbs up by Galen Glovier at a Mopar only event in Omaha, Nebraska. Overall the car is in exceptional condition. The car was given a concourse style restoration with the desire to drive and show the car, not trailer or hide it away. It has a museum quality restoration with no leaks or deficiencies. The car is fun to drive. The air conditioning will freeze you out. The power steering and brakes make this car effortless to drive. I have decided to put this car up for auction to pursue other projects. Serious bidders please feel free to contact me with your questions.
