The "One of None" Story

1965 Chrysler had a problem, they had just been banned from using theirnewly developed racing engine in NASCAR competion. The reason? The new Hemi was deemed an "experimental engine" as fewer than 500 units had been sold to the public in regular production cars. The solution? Offer the new behemoth In any 1966Dodge or Plymouth B-Bodyanyone wanted, all they had to do was shell out the money and sign the order! There were some issues though, the Hemi engine option alone cost over $800.00 in a car that cost under $3,000.00, a VERY spendy engine, and even at $800.00, Chrysler is said to have lost money on every one sold. The surprise was that they sold more than they figured, well over the 500 unit minimum they needed to qualify it as legal to use in NASCAR, buyers simply went crazy for the new Elephant engine. The company bean counters went nuts! How to stop the bleeding? Simple, in 1967 they knew that with the burgeoning popularity of the Hemi it would easily meet the 500 unit productionminimum so they decided to pull the Hemi fromthe options list of all but the very top of the line (read expensive and more profitable) 1967 cars. This meant that if you wanted a 426 Hemi, you also needed to order a Plymouth GTX a Dodge R/T, or a Dodge Charger. This brings us to the car being auctioned here as it is none of the above, yet it came with a factory installed 426 Hemi engine, it falls in line with "never say never" when it comes to Mopar. Apparently, a few people wanted a 426 Hemi, but with a more subdued appearance than the GTX offered, and somehow convinced the selling dealership to order them what they wanted (likely all it took was the desire, the money, and a pulse). So, as it turned out Chrysler did build a very few of these special cars, and they do in fact exist, making them "One of None".

The car being sold here is a very solid project car, it is missing the original engine, transmission, Hemi K-member, and radiator. What you see is what you get, no extra parts. It's a great car and a fantastic opportunity to buy a super solid and REAL 426 Hemi project car at a price that won't buy a run of the mill Duster these days. It's it's a beautiful color and a very special "one of none" example to boot, you won't find many opportunities like this these days.
