1973 Plymouth Duster *Revived Survivor*
This 1973 Duster is a true survivor (all numbers matching) in excellent original condition. Actual miles are 139,325. The original purchaser owned this car until recently and documented all service work done to it through the first 134K miles. It has been extremely well taken care of and has mostly been parked for the past 9 years or so.The exterior is still in it's original Mopar B-1 (Sky Blue) paint. The car has all of it's original sheet metal and is very straight. It appears that there was at least a partial repaint on the back portion of the car at some point. There are a couple very minor bumps and bruises on the body and the paint is showing it's age, but overall it's in amazing condition for being 45 years old. A new vinyl top has been installed and all chrome trim is present and mostly in great condition.
The interior is in spectacular condition. It has a new dash pad and new carpet. The original seats, door panels, dash and all the rest of the interior is like new - except the rear package tray which is quite faded. The original AM radio still works and sounds great. The speedometer and all lights and gauges work except for the ALT gauge and left turn signal indicator light which I didn't notice had fallen out when I replaced the dash pad.
I pulled the engine and re-gasketed just about everything except the heads. Since the oil light had been flickering, I installed a new oil pump while I had the opportunity. The oil light still flickers at idle when hot but the pressure is fine. Years of grease and grime was cleaned from the engine and engine bay, which I then repainted in their original factory colors. I installed a new carburetor, master cylinder, power steering pump, and replaced the steering gear box. I also changed the transmission filter and replaced the transmission pan gasket at that time. The car also has a new exhaust system including mufflers. This is obviously not stock - but it is better.
The entire car is remarkably rust-free. There are a few very minor bubbles in the paint on the extreme lower quarter panels near the rear wheels. The car has no spare tire but has the original hold-down and bumper jack equipment. The front and rear bumperettes are missing. I elected not to replace them because I think they are hideous looking. However, they are usually readily available for cheap.
The car starts right up, runs and drives great. But to be perfect, it still needs a couple of minor things in addition to what I have already mentioned. There sometimes is a fan belt squeal when starting the engine - especially if it has be sitting a long time. In addition, the transmission gear selector seal - about a $7 item - might leak a tiny bit, but will leak more if the transmission is too full. It has not leaked at all since driving it yesterday. It's a fairly easy job to replace the seal with the transmission out, but I didn't think to do that when I had the chance.
Note: I purchased the replacement vinyl top quite a while ago, intending to install it myself. However, the car was coming out so nice that I decided to hire a professional to install it since I had never done one before. It is the only thing on the car I did not do myself. Unfortunalely, the installer put numerous dents in the drip rail trims when reinstalling them. You can kind of see this in the pics if you zoom way in.
I had already planned to sell the car when this happened yesterday, and am going to let it go like this. Just know that my reserve price is thousands below what comparable 73 and 74 Dusters have recently sold for.
