1976 Plymouth Gran Fury Police Interceptor, 440 V8
1976 Plymouth G80 Gran Fury Police
The "G80" in the title is a function of the eBay listing. It is not correct, and I cannot delete the G80 text.
This Gran Fury was originally an unmarked Minnesota State Patrol Supervisor's car. I am the first and only private owner. I bought it in the late 1970s at a state auction. In 1982, while driving on the freeway, one of the frost plugs fell out of the engine block, resulting in all the coolant rapidly draining from the engine, causing the engine to seriously overheat, though it did NOT seize up.
I decided to perform a complete rebuild of the 440 Police Interceptor engine. The engine was completely torn down to the bare block. The block was boiled out, and the cylinders were honed to remove light scoring caused by the overheating. The pistons were knurled for a snug fit in the honed cylinders. The heads were slightly warped as a result of the overheating. So the heads were planed to make them flat, and completely rebuilt, with all new valve springs. All new bearings and piston rings were installed. The original cam was replaced with a Crane high torque cam for better performance at lower RPMs. The original intake manifold was replaced with an Edelbrock intake manifold, and the original valve covers were replaced with Edelbrock valve covers. The exhaust manifolds were replaced with Hooker Headers. Then the finished engine was re-installed in the car.
And that is where the project stopped. The linkage that the connects the steering column shifter to the transmission necessarily has to be modified, as the headers block the factory linkage path. This linkage modification was not accomplished, and as time passed, this project became less of a priority, until it was entirely abandoned. The rebuilt engine has never been run.
The car has been garaged since 1982. The body is solid, with a few spots of light surface rust and a few dings. The interior has been customized. The original front seat has been replaced with a fully reclining split bench seat, from an American Motors Ambassador. Front and back seats are covered in custom gold furry fabric. Custom carpeting has been installed over the original vinyl mat floor. I have extra body parts for this car. I have a hood, trunk lid, and all four doors from a 1977 Plymouth Gran Fury Minnesota State Patrol car. The 1977 body parts will fit the 1976 Fury. The 1977 doors have power windows, the 1976 Fury has hand crank windows.
This car is not running. It will need to be towed or trailered. The buyer will need to come to my location or arrange for towing, trailering, or shipping. The buyer is responsible for all costs to take possession of the car.
