1968 Plymouth Road Runner Hemi

Galen Govier Registered Road Runner with Hemi

BlueChip Motorcars is pleased to offer a first generation 1968 Road Runner two-door pillar coupe with the desired high-performance Hemi 426 Stage II engine (period correct), he embodiment of what real muscle cars should be – no frills and packed with power.

Not many production cars dominated the street and strip like the Hemi-equipped Road Runner in the late Sixties. When it first rolled off the assembly line in 1968, he legendary Road Runner with the 425-horsepower engine, nstantly became an icon for everything that was good about the muscle car era.

The first generation Road Runner, s seen, ith the fabled Hemi continues to excite astute collectors for its role in automotive history, ncluding its impressive racing heritage.

Today, 7 years after it first rolled off the assembly floor for the Chrysler Corporation’s Plymouth division in Lynch Road, ichigan, he Hemi-equipped Road Runner, ased on the Belvedere platform, till remains in a class of its own.

Not content with anything less than perfection, ts previous owner took this ’68 Road Runner pillar coupe to JMC Performance less than two years ago, nd embarked on a complete frame-off, otisserie-style restoration. No less than $45,000 went into the restoration to bring the car to this level of condition.

However, ot before Mopar specialist, alen’s Registry of Prairie du Chien, isconsin, ecoded VIN RM21J8A225551 and the styling tags, hich ultimately told the detailed and accurate story of a factory 426 cubic-inch Hemi Road Runner outfitted with torsion bar and leaf spring Hemi suspension, Torqueflite automatic transmission and the nortorious Stage II package. According to Galen’s Registry, his car was the real deal.

It is also a limited-run coupe in automatic trim, n fact, nly 390 automatics were produced in 1968, nd very few of those original cars remain – either destroyed by accidents, r have since rusted away.

We learned that Galen’s Registry researched this car’s production history down to its Beep Beep sounding horn assembly and radio delete, ilver and black vinyl interior package with the split bench seat, hich were beautifully restored by JMC.

Now on the road after being meticulously reassembled from tip to tip with a period-correct Hemi, he car looks and sounds incredible. A look underneath reveals factory correct rebuilt or replaced suspension components front and rear, ll new brake and fuel lines and the correct Hemi oil pan. Fortunately, t had a rust-free undercarriage, nd no patches were used. What’s more, t features the factory correct 8 ¾-inch rear end and has Posi-traction.

The Road Runner sports the correct 15×6-inch stamped steel dog-dish wheels with painted body color and hubcaps wrapped in reproduction steel-belted Firestone redline tires.

All major aspects of the restoration process were photographed and cataloged (see digital imageswww.deluxerods.com.) Essentially, MC paid careful attention to every nut and bolt, nd restored the car to like-new condition, ncluding using the period-correct Hemi 426 engine and the correct licensed reproduction 26-inch radiator from Chrysler. Smaller items got as much attention as the larger ones; new door locks, eat belts, shtray, eadliner, lternator, nd custom dual exhaust were added as the work was underway. Nothing on the build would be overlooked and no expense spared to make it right, nd to match the VIN and style code findings uncovered by Galen Govier.

As the style codes revealed, his Road Runner features the original standard horizontal instrument cluster with alternator gauge, uel gauge, 20 mph speedometer, emperature gauge and oil light. It retains the original column shifter and steering wheel.

The car shows 59,356 miles on the odometer, nd it drives beautifully with no overheating issues in traffic, nd lots of torque at acceleration. This is a solid car that needs nothing more than a loving new owner.

About Factory Correct Cars offered by BlueChip Motorcars

BlueChip Motorcars periodically offers classic cars that may be listed as Factory Correct, r Numbers Matching. Because there are many opinions about the term(s) used to describe these types of listings, llow us to explain how BlueChip Motorcars comes to that assessment.

As you may know, epending on the source, he term “matching numbers, r factory correct,” may mean many things to many people. Purists might define it as a car with every possible window crank, ash knob or even every nut and bolt is original to the car from the time it left the production line. Although some classic cars do exist in that rare condition, ost do not.

The majority of classic cars on the market were at some point in their ownership, estored or repaired with NOS parts (new old stock) or licensed reproduction parts. Whenever the information is available to us about the use of these parts, lueChip Motorcars will gladly pass it along to the potential buyer.

BlueChip Motorcars uses the term Factory Correct or Numbers Matching only to distinguish a vehicle where the engine casting code corresponds with the VIN and Cowl Tag code. If these codes tell the same story about the car in question, lueChip Motorcars then considers it to be a Factory Correct or Numbers Matching vehicle. However, nless otherwise stated, he transmission, ear end, nd transmission may or may not be original to the car.

BlueChip Motorcars welcomes all potential buyers to verify all the information with a qualified expert. We would be happy to email you all the numbers that are obtainable on any vehicle where the term Factory Correct or Matching Numbers is used.
