Description:

1970 Plymouth Barracuda Cuda AAR

This is a stunning 1970 Plymouth AAR Cuda with a numbers matching J code 340 Six Barrel engine and 4 speed manual transmission. This car includes valuable documentation such as the original Broadcast Sheet, a letter of accuracy and a Visual Inspection certificate from Galen’s Registry. This was the only small-block “Six Pack” layout ever released by Plymouth, featuring a trio of vacuum-secondary Holly 2 Barrel carburetors capable of meeting literally any demand this engine put on them. It is covered by an air cleaner that can take fresh are directly from the forward-facing NACA-type duct in the hood. The redesigned Plymouth Cuda, the performance variation of the Barracuda model, needed to be built in sufficient quantity to meet the ACCUS/FIA production ruling. To that end, 2,724 examples with the AAR package were created with only 1,120 of them being 4 speed models like this one. This one is number 322 in VIN sequence. Coded A53, the AAR package featured many pieces not available on any other Cuda models, a hinged fiberglass hood with special duct-style scoop and hood pins, decklid flush-mount spoiler, side-exit exhaust with chrome tips, code-U01 15 inch Goodyear Polyglass tires in offset sizes and the unique E55 340 Six-Barrel engine. Moreover, the AAR models came with heavy-duty handling equipment, fast ratio steering and better cooling equipment than other 340-powered versions. This car, which has been thoroughly refreshed through a rotisserie restoration, features the optional 15 inch Rallye wheels with the E60X15 front tires and G60X15 rear tires, road lamps, Rallye dash cluster with in-dash tachometer and clock, Hurst Pistol Grip shifte, front chin spoiler and color coded mirrors. Coupled with its gorgeous E5 Rallye Red paint, the car features strobe-like black graphics to match the blacked-out hood and spoilers, the special AAR logo at the rear quarter panels as well as limited brightwork, resulting in a stunning example of this single-year production. This car also includes power front disc brakes, collapsible spare tire and AM radio. The j-code engine is itself unique, featuring a better block casting and special cylinder heads that were stock in design but created to allow for much greater porting work. Backed by an A833 4-speed (code D21) and the 3.55:1 ratio with the HD 8 ¾ differential held in place by a spring package similar to the Hemi models, the 340 AAR was considered by many owners a fun car to drive under any conditions while its raked stance denoted power. Many of these cars were subsequently driven with great abandon, resulting in their scarcity today. The odometer shows 8,749 miles but the Georgia title odometer is listed as Exempt. This car would make a great addition to any serious collection of American muscle or production sports-car models. Please contact Savannah Classic Cars at 912-235-2347.
