1957 Plymouth Other
For your consideration is this great 1957 Plymouth Savoy. This car is a fantastic true Turn key original survivor with 64,000 original miles that has been painstakingly rebuilt to original standards. The body is not perfect but in very good condition. Mostly old dings and some small dents, very little rust that can be repaired easily if someone chose to repaint the car. I have included all areas that have rust in the pictures. All the doors are rust free, even the undersides where most older cars are eat out. Included with the sale are NOS dog leg patches as these would be the most difficult to hand fabricate if the repair was to be made. The front passenger fender is a donor rust free fender was stripped repaired and color matched to the car. No bondo was used in its repair as it was metal finished, and has only a small amount of lead that I used to blend a corner that was low. As an interesting note most all of the factory chalk marks and factory inspection stamps are intact and legible throughout the car. The car has had one repaint before I purchased the car, it shows well but has flaws. Many extras are included including with the car is a set of factory snow chains that have never been used, plus all the literature that came with the car. Also I have many extras, trim, new used and NOS parts to keep her going for many years.
The whole interior with the exception of the front seat (the foam dried out and sun baked the fabric under the driver) is very good and clean. I have found out that SMS has the original fabric so re-upholstering and matching the front seat to the rest of the interior would be easy. All the original floor mates are intact and presentable, the trunk mat is brittle but intact. Also I left what is left of the plastic covers on the rear seat. The material underneath is like new!
As for the mechanical aspect of the car It has a 230 L head straight six coupled with a manual three speed transmission and a rear axle ratio of 3.73. I cruise around 55-60 miles per hour with no problem and typically get 21 miles per gallon on the Highway and about 16-1/2 to 17 in town. This car is a true pleasure to drive and since I rebuilt it, I have logged 13,000 miles of trouble free in two years of owning it. I recently took it on a trip to California and had no problems. I have over 1,000 pictures of the build that will be included with the purchase of the car.
Some detail of the rebuild are as follows.
-Completely rebuilt Lockhead brake system. Brand new grade FF lined shoes, new front return springs, new wheel cylinders, new master cylinder, and completely new brake lines front to back. The car stops fast and straight.
-The suspension is all new. The rear springs were re-arched to correct specifications with new anti squeak pads and center pins. New rear shackle bushings, front spring eye shackle bushings, all new upper control arm bushings, shocks, lower torsion bar bushings, and strut bushings. This car has the later style reinforced torsion bars that replaced the originals. The car drives straight and effortlessly with no wander.
-Tires are two years old and still have at least 80 percent tread, cosmetically they still look great, and I do rotate the tires every 2500 miles. The spare is the original Goodyear super cushion.
-The cooling system. The radiator has been re-cored and I have a 190 degree thermostat in the engine. The water distribution tube has been replaced with an NOS one. The water pump has been rebuilt. The car has absolutely never overheated. The Heater core was checked and the heater control valve has been professionally rebuilt. The heater works perfectly and gets hot fast on full blast! I rebuilt the Blower motor and new rain gutter flaps were installed. I machined new brass heater hose fittings to match the original steel ones that were rotten.
-Fuel system, The gas tank has been thoroughly cleaned, however not much work was needed as it is like new inside. I have repaired the fuel sending unit, though it is accurate it intermittently works when it is at 1/4 tank. lower or higher it works great. The fuel pump is a new replacement, I still have the original carter pump that will go with the car. The Carburetor has been rebuilt with quality ethanol proof parts.
-The Electrical System has also been completely gone through, all wires have been inspected and replaced if necessar, connections were all cleaned, NOS correct Tung-Sol bulbs were installed, NOS Tung-Sol headlights. I did install an NOS reverse light set up. The instrument panel has been disassembled, the speedometer was rebuilt, all gauges were checked, and NOS Bulbs were installed. All switches have been carefully disassembled and rebuilt, including the ignition switch. Plus a new voltage regulator. Everything works great!
-The Engine, was completely torn down and reconditioned. The whole block was thoroughly cleaned and inspected. The cylinders were honed and new rings installed. The valves were reground, new valve guides and the seats were ground. New Timing chain, and all new main and rod bearings were used. The engine runs extremely smooth and strong. The only problem is the rear valve lifter inspection cover leaks and the front of the oil pan does seep oil. Otherwise it runs like new, and the leaks could be repaired without too much trouble. Brand new engine mounts.
-Transmission has been disassembled cleaned and inspected. I found a factory defected reverse idler shaft that I replaced with an NOS one. Otherwise brand new bearings and seals. All the gears and synchronizes looked new with no chips or even indication of wear. Brand new Transmission mount installed. The Clutch was disassembled and rebuilt. NOS lining was installed on the clutch as well. The trans shifts beautifully and smooth with no noise.
-Driveshaft has been rebuilt and checked for balance. New rubber universal cover has been installed, the original u joint was disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated.
-Rear axle has been disassembled and very thoroughly cleaned. All new bearings and seals were installed.
I covered as much of the car as I can. It has been one of the funnest vehicles that I have ever driven. Everywhere I go people love it and wonder what it is. I have heard some great stories from those who have owned one in the past. At every car show it draws large crowds, especially when the hood is up, most people are amazed to see that it has a flathead 6. With all the papers and back stories to go with the car, it really is a very unique example.
Your probably wondering why I am selling the car, the answer is simple. I enjoy rebuilding classics, and I am almost done with a 1952 Hudson that will be taking over as daily driver. I am selling this one to make room for the next build. As mentioned before I have many pictures of the build, If you would like any more pictures or information please contact me.
-I am not implying any warranty with this sale. Just letting you know what has been done to the car.
-I prefer cash or cashiers check for payment.
-I can help with loading if you choose to have the car shipped. However I would trust the car to drive anywhere. Fly out to Fort Smith Arkansas and drive her home.
Thank you for your consideration on this great car, and good luck!
