This rare and desirable Packard Super Eight Convertible Victoria is ready for review. This is one of only 4,250 examples built in 1949 and it was Packard’s first open car offered since 1942.This Victoria was owned by a local collector who purchased the car in 2013 from a widow in Oregon. The engine was completely rebuilt in 2013 and in 2016 Classic Car Studio here in St. Louis performed another $13,000 in services, maintenance and rebuilding the complete hydraulic system. All receipts for the work is included with the car. Until 1951, Packard did not follow an annual model year changeover like many of its competitors. The Super Eight was the larger of the two eight-cylinder luxury automobiles produced by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan and it rivaled Cadillac’s new P-38-inspired models with those newfangled tailfins. Here, dressed in Sylvan Green Metallic (code N), the car’s paint and trim are in overall very good order, the contrasting tan folding top is in excellent order. The car’s bodywork, which came from Briggs, is straight, the engine bay is in decent order, as is the cargo area, which includes a full-sized spare tire mounted on a wheel. The battery is new and the car’s wraparound chrome bumpers with bumper guards look great. A pair of fog lights are nestled within the front, wraparound grille. This car rolls on Coker Classic wide whitewalls. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel topped by a factory chrome wheel cover and trim rings that are in good, original condition. It rides on a 120-inch wheelbase. Under the side-hinged hood is Packard’s stout 327 CID inline eight-cylinder engine as a rival to Cadillac’s new-for-’49 331 CID V-8 engine. This straight eight is mated to a three-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience features include power windows and a power front seat. The engine was completely rebuilt in 2013. Inside, there is room for six people. The tan leather upholstery (code 214) on the front and rear bench seats is in excellent order while the brown carpet is in very good shape. The ivory two-spoke steering wheel is in good order while the inner door panels and green metal instrument panel are all in very good shape and echo the rest of the interior. Completing the interior are a column-mounted shifter topped by an ivory handle and a Philco AM radio. Clipper Custom Super Eights and Custom Eights were very close relatives to their respective Super models, distinguished outside by the lack of an eggcrate grille and small rear chrome trim molding under the trunk lid on Supers. In 1949, a new Super Eight Deluxe was added to the line. This car had also the Custom Eight's eggcrate grille, but not the rear trim. The Super Eight models have large belt line molding, and no trim on the hood. The taillights are flush mounted in the rear fenders. The cars also have a horizontal bar style front grille.Convertible competition to this Packard in 1949 included Cadillac’s Series 62, Delahaye’s 135M, Hudson’s Commodore Custom Eight Brougham and Lincoln’s Cosmopolitan. Packard had one of the most recognized advertising slogans in the automotive industry – “Ask the Man who Owns One.†If you want to be asked about this car at a stoplight or at a car show or cruise night, you need to be the one who visits MotoeXotica to see it for yourself so you can own it.VIN: 2279911015Chassis #: 2232 This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri.
