Description:
1956 Packard Clipper Super
Up for bids is my 1956 Clipper Super Hardtop Coupe, by Packard Corporation. One of only 3999 built. This car is a solid restoration candidate. It had an amateur restoration in the late 90s. The interior was fully redone and the seats and carpet remain in beautiful condition, very pliable and durable, no need to worry about any splits! Haul the kids without worrying about the seats. It needs to have a new headliner but all the bows and installation are still intact and ready to go. Door panels need attention but are repairable. The car is complete except for "Super" scripts that go on each front fender. The frame is solid. The loose trim off the quarter panel is included with the car.The 352 engine runs like a sewing machine and has a freshly rebuilt fuel pump. The previous owner did put an alternator on the car and it works fine. However, the original generator is still with the car and it did work when it was removed. All exterior lights work. The heater fan works as it should.I have cleaned the fuel tank and installed a new brass drain plug. The car still has its correct Packard steel wheels (all 5) including bumper jack. It is factory two-tone, Dover White with Maltese Gray Iridescent.
Old Car Price Guide lists a #4 driver, which this car is not far from, as valued at $5200. A #5 non running restoration candidate is listed at $3100, so I feel my starting bid is very fair.
The car is equipped with power steering and power brakes. It also has dual exhaust that is functional with no holes that I have seen. The brakes are functional but should be serviced. It is also equipped with Torsion-Level ride. The Ultramatic transmission moves the car effortlessly but will move only in high gear and reverse. Park works properly as well. I was told by a Packard professional and mechanic that this problem is probably due to a loose pin accessible by removing the transmission pan and fixable by putting the pin back in place.
The front and rear windshields are in good condition, however the side glass has a crack in the drivers door glass and the rest has gotten cloudy from being in the weather over the years. The rear glass has a very cool 1960-1961 School Teachers association decal.
The car needs sheet metal attention in the front fenders. The quarters have been repaired and have seemed to hold up well for not being garage kept the past 10 years. There is rust around the back windows under the trim but none of it is rotted through except for one pin hole on the passengers side as shown. The trunk has a few holes as shown and needs repair. The floor pans I believe are good but the fronts may need some attention. A shot of the pans from under the car is shown.
The history that is known on this car is that it was a Kentucky car until around 2001 when it was in the Richmond Virginia area. I bought it and it is now in South Carolina. I bought this car to restore and cruise in as a driver but I am overwhelmed with too many projects at the moment and have decided to concentrate specifically on my Edsels instead. I will also be listing a my 1980's Mercury Full Size wagons on here soon as well.
Car has a clear title.
