1966 Ford Mustang

Vehicle Overview

Up for sale is our 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe project car - a C-Code 289 V8 with 3-speed manual transmission. This classic Mustang is vintage burgundy with a black standard interior. Purchased from an owner in Indiana in 1976, it was driven until 1987 and has been stored ever since. We’re parting with it as we downsize for retirement and travel.

This is a complete project car offered in#5 condition(restoration candidate). It is not currently drivable and will require restoration, but remains a solid project car for the right enthusiast. The engine and transmission were operational at the time of storage. The engine was last started around 1995-1996. Most of this vintage Mustang is in original condition. It could be partially restored to drivable condition.

Some restoration work has been done, however, we stopped short of restoring the braking system, the rear suspension system, and inspecting the entire fuel delivery system. The car may be driveable under limited conditions for $1000-$2000. Parts of the wiring harness have been replaced.

Condition Summary

  • Exterior:
Repainted OEM color around 1981–1982 with bodywork on the rear drivers side wheel well to replace rust. Panels are mostly solid with typical rust at the wheel wells and lower body. Undercarriage has extensive rust from winter use and likely needs newfloor pans and possibly frame rails to ensure structural integrity.
  • Interior:
Original interior with damage to the driver’s seat from mice. A salvaged center console—likely from a '66 model—was added and painted black to match. AM radio condition is unknown; heater fan is non-functional.
  • Powertrain:
The 289 V8 engine (a period-correct replacement from a 1965–66 Mustang, installed ~1978), clutch, and 3-speed transmission are present but need rebuilding. The engine presently turns over using the starter.

Known Issues / Needed Repairs

  • The master cylinder failed in storage so the brakes do not work. It appears that the brake fluid leaked onto the transmission / rear differential. Brakes will need a new master cylinder, and possibly brake lines, brake pads etc.
  • The rear end sits low. The leaf springs have failed and need replacement with mounting hardware. The backend is sitting on the safety stop rubber guards mounted on the top of the axel as a result. This is a common issue with Mustangs.
  • Fuel lines and possibly fuel tank may need replacement.
  • Exhaust system needs replacement, including the muffler and exhaust pipes.
  • Interior heater fan needs replacement, and all parts are included to replace the entire heater assembly.
  • Tires are old and need replacement, but hold air (except spare, which doesn’t).
  • Drivers side door will not close because the lock is stuck in the open position. All parts needed to replace the driver side door locking assembly are included, which will fix the door locking issue.

As noted, this car is not drivable. It must be transported using a flatbed trailer with a winch. Towing on its own wheels is not advised.

We have owned this Mustang since 1976 when we purchased it from a private party in Indiana. It was a daily driver for over a decade and holds deep sentimental value. The title is clear and has been transferred to Wisconsin.
